Shangri-La is located in the rural beach community of Kapoho Beach Lots on the easternmost tip of the Island of Hawaii. The area features the finest weather in East Hawaii (and arguably the whole world). It is 80 degrees almost every day of the year and the air has been measured to be the cleanest on the planet.
The pride and joy of the neighborhood is the famous Champagne Pond, a large geothermal-heated warm pond that is connected to the ocean at high tide. Any fish and sea turtles that remain when the tide goes out will be there until the next high tide.
Close by are the fabulous Wai Opae Tide Pools and Marine Sanctuary, the site of the best coral reefs and snorkeling in East Hawaii. Further up the road is the beautiful Kehena Black Sand beach.
Pahoa town is a 15 minute drive and has fine restaurants, shops, farmers market, pizza and sandwich shops, fish market, live music club, supermarket, gas stations. The Sunday farmer's market is a major social event and great for people watching (not to mention getting your local fresh fruits and vegetables).
The City of Hilo is about a 40 minute drive and has many more restaurants, shops, movie theatre, cultural events, live music and dancing, waterfalls, botanical gardens, University of Hawaii, and a new planetarium and astronomy center.
Only a 45 minute drive is the awesome Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a Unesco World Heritage Site. This site contains two of the most active volcanoes in the world, Kilauea and Mauna Loa, both of which tower over the Pacific Ocean. Volcanic eruptions have created a constantly changing landscape, and the lava flows reveal surprising geological formations. Rare birds and endemic species can be found there, as well as forests of giant ferns. Walking and helicopter tours are available.
