Things To Do
The Kona Coast offers many fun and exciting activities including boat tours for snorkeling, scuba diving, sunset dinner sails and also humpback whale watching during the winter months. The ocean waters of West Maui are also a premier big game fishing destination where you can go after big swordfish and giant marlin.
There are also plenty of land activities in Kona including championship golf courses, horseback riding and ATV tours. Several exceptional golf courses are found along the Kona Coast with more along the Kohala Coast just to the north. Take a drive up into Kona Coffee Country to tour a coffee farm and taste the renowned Kona Coffee at the source. A fun day trip from Kona is a drive north along the Kohala Coast and then west along the Hamakua Coast to see Waipio Valley, Akaka Falls and Hilo town. Another fun adventure is a visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and see the steaming summit craters along Crater Rim Drive.
Nearby Beaches
There are many great beaches along the Kona Coast including Kamakahonu Beach near Kailua Pier which is a nice family beach and also popular for outrigger canoe paddling and stand up paddle boarding, as well as good snorkeling just to the north of the beach. Green sea turtles are often seen at Kahaluu Beach which is somewhat protected from the open sea by a fringing coral reef, creating good swimming and snorkeling conditions while surfers enjoy the waves beyond the reef. To the south is Kealakekua Bay known for its resident spinner dolphins. This is a nice place to take a guided kayak excursion and you can also visit the monument to Captain Cook on the shore.
Restaurants
The restaurants of Kailua-Kona number more than 100 with something for every taste and budget. For gourmet pizza and hearty microbrew check out the Kona Pub & Brewery which features live music on Sunday evenings. At Kona Harbor's docks you can find some fresh seafood at the Harbor House Restaurant. The Coconut Grove Marketplace is another great place for seaside dining. Gorgeous sunset dining with an ocean view can be found at the Beach House Restaurant in Hualalai which serves up an innovative cuisine including Greek salads, gourmet burgers and gazpacho soup. Reservations are recommended. Meet some farmers and sample the local produce at the Keauhou Farmers Market on Saturday mornings at the Keauhou Shopping Center.
Shopping
Downtown Kailua-Kona, including historic Kailua Village, is home to many interesting shops to browse including a wealth of art galleries as well as boutique gift shops. The popular Coconut Grove Marketplace is located on the oceanfront and often features live music. More fun shops and art galleries can be found at the Kona Inn Shopping Village in this historic 1928 Kona Inn, and the Alii Gardens Marketplace has dozens of outdoor stalls selling a variety of local products from flowers to Kona coffee. Drive up into Kona Coffee Country to visit the charming small towns, meet the coffee farmers and get fresh-roasted coffee beans straight from the source.
Getting Around
Renting a car is recommended when staying in your Kona condo so you have easy access to the area's beaches and attractions as well as day trips to the Kohala Coast, Waimea town and Hilo as well as Volcanoes National Park. Keahole International Airport is located about 15-minutes north. The Big Island's free bus service is called Hele On Bus and stops at various points around the island including transportation between Kona and Hilo daily except Sunday.
Weather and Ocean Conditions
The Kona Coast is known for its comfortable weather with sunny and warm conditions virtually all year around. Temperatures are typically in the mid to high 70s with summer being a bit warmer and winter a bit cooler. Average annual rainfall is about ten inches near the coast though the mountain areas may see more rain as clouds form over the slopes in the afternoons.
Ocean conditions are typically quite calm along the Kona coastline though this can change from day to day so you always need to use caution around the ocean. Visit lifeguarded beaches to participate in ocean activities, and check with water safety personnel about the safest areas for the water sports you choose.

The town has numerous preserved historic structures including the 1836 Mokuaikaua Church and Hulihee Palace which was home to Hawaiian royalty in the 1800s. Also throughout the region are many ancient heiau (sacred places of worship), fishponds and petroglyphs carved into rock.
