A day trip to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park provides an unforgettable adventure including massive summit craters, and you can even walk through a subterranean lava tube! The Puako coastal region is a great place to see humpback whales passing by offshore during the winter months.

Nearby Beaches
Explore tidepools and go snorkeling along the Puako Bay coastline with its fringing coral reefs and black sand and coral beaches. Follow the trail to Hawaii's largest fields of petroglyphs (ancient carvings in rocks) at the Puako Petroglyph Archaeological Preserve. Just north of Puako is Hapuna Beach which is one of the Big Island's nicest white-sand beaches. Other notable Kohala Coast beaches include Anaehoomalu Bay, Kauanoa Bay and Spencer Beach Park, each with its own beauty and charm.

Restaurants
The Kohala Coast resort areas offer a wide range of dining opportunities and you can also make the drive over to Waimea town (also called Kamuela) where there are plenty of places to eat. There is no shortage of fine dining in this region yet there are also some lower key venues to grab a burger and soda to fuel up during the day so you can continue your Big Island adventures. More exceptional fine dining can be found in the posh resort areas of the Kona Coast, and you will find cuisines to please every palate in Kailua-Kona and historic Kailua village.

Shopping
Shopping is plentiful in this region including resort shopping at nearby Waikoloa Village. Stop in at M's Puako General Store to stock up on supplies and find some interesting local items. Some excellent shopping can be found in the various other Kohala Coast resort areas as well as nearby Waimea town and the small North Kohala towns of Hawi and Kapaau. Parker Square in Waimea town has a variety of interesting shops to browse including handmade gifts by local artisans. For more stores to browse take a drive down the resort areas of the Kona Coast and historic Kailua village.

Getting Around
A rental car is recommended when staying in Puako vacation rentals so you can explore the Kohala Coast and beyond including pristine beaches, cultural and historical sites, and elegant resort areas as well as day trips to the Kona Coast and historic Kailua village, Hilo town and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Puako is about a half-hour drive from Kona International Airport. The island's bus service, called Hele On Bus, is free and stops at various points around the island including transportation between Kona and Hilo every day except Sunday.

Weather and Ocean Conditions
The Puako region on the Kohala Coast is known for its sunny weather which remains relatively stable all year around. Both the Kohala and Kona coastlines on the Big Island's western shore are the warmest and driest areas of the island while Hilo on the northeast shore receives more rainfall. Expect average daily temperatures around 80 degrees F., perhaps a bit hotter in the summer and a bit cooler in the winter, with nighttime temperatures dropping about 15 degrees. Ocean conditions vary widely at Big Island beaches with many areas exposed to strong currents and potentially dangerous surf, particularly during the winter months. Numerous beaches provide good protection from the open ocean and provide safe areas for swimming and snorkeling. Visitors are urged to only visit lifeguarded beaches for water activities and heed all posted warnings. Check with lifeguards about the safest areas to participate in the activities you choose.
