What to do at Kalihiwai Beach? The news is out and its good news for most. Anytime the tourists find out where the locals hang out its a good thing and a bad thing. Also consider our 5 Kalihiwai vacation rentals and 1 Kalihiwai luxury rentals.
Its great for the tourists as they have a new place that is usually a great place, otherwise the locals wouldnt be there. The bad news is for the locals, they now have one fewer places to hang out without tourists. The beach is excellent for a number of reasons. You can drive right up to it and there are ironwood trees for shade right on the edge of the sand. During the summer months you might catch a large spinner dolphin pod frolicking in the surf. Its a great beach also due to it being at the mouth of the Kalihiwai River.

The best time to be there is in the late spring through the early to mid fall. This is due to it being on the North Shore and like every island; the North Shore during the winter can be dangerous due to the huge swells that come in off the ocean. It is very dangerous and only the most experienced surfers should attempt these waves. During the summer its a good place to learn to surf or boogie board. There really arent any reefs or places to snorkel or dive. Its mostly a swimming beach though so bring a picnic and enjoy the shade of the trees and the idyllic setting of another beautiful Kauai beach. For more options there are a number of beaches in the vicinity. There are also many different activities to do in that area. Of course all of the water sports can be done in the area such as going to the areas with reefs and snorkeling and scuba diving. For those who like to kayak, it is an excellent area and one great trip is along the Na Pali Coast. Its spectacular and a great source of exercise. If you are not an experienced kayaker you might want to go with a tour as it can be tricky or dangerous near the coastline in places. Hiking the Na Pali Coast is another option along with seeing it by helicopter. If youve never taken a helicopter tour, Kauai is the best place in the world to do your first one. It is truly awesome to see the Na Pali Coast, Waimea Canyon considered to be the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, the rain forest around the wettest place on earth and the coastline of Kauai. There is nothing like it. There is also horseback riding, river boat trips either powered or kayaks, world renowned golf at the Princeville courses, hiking, biking, shopping, ATV riding, tubing, rafting, water skiing, ocean tours and all of the other amenities available on Kauai. The North Shore of Kauai is perhaps one of the most laid back areas you will find and still be considered a tourist destination. The sites are spectacular with both the Kalihiwai River and Hanalei Bay. If youre there in the winter, you may catch pods of whales off the coast and if youre so inclined, you can take a whale watching tour to get up close to these magnificent creatures of the deep. Enjoy your time at Kalihiwai and remember to respect the private property of those that live along the road leading to it. Aloha! .
