Art Cafe Hemingway

Description

They take the" food as art" concept to a whole new Hawaiian infused level, at Caf Hemingway. Combining flavors mixed from old world European cuisine with the influence of Kauai fresh produce and livestock, chef Jana Boemer makes her dishes with remarkable twists that engage the pallet, much like fine art. Their charming restaurant is like an antique throwback to an old world European caf, easily found in the eastside town of Kapaa.

At a Glance:
Cuisine: experimental Hawaiian-European fusion

Location: Kapaa, Kauai
Hours:  Wednesday through Sunday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. open for Dinner from 6 to 9 p.m.
Environment/Dcor: like a great caf you would find in a European town. Great spot for a date at night, with dim-lights and candlelight. Daytime is warm, light and cozy and more espresso bar oriented.

Commonly referred to as "Hemingway's" by locals, this spot has established a successful nook as it defies simple classifications. From the moment you enter the Caf Hemingway you realize that you are in for relief from the standard island-style dining scene.  It is in fact, like no other restaurant on island. The gracious, yet humble owners are heart and soul of the establishment. Truly inspired cuisine speaks for itself, so they let the food do the talking, and retreated at the thought of classifying it.

During the daytime, it becomes apparent that this caf has a feel of being at someone's home, with a bit more sophistication. The furnishings and seating options create cozy areas to gather with friends or family over brunch, or fine coffees. After dark the evening lighting and ambience shifts to become absolutely magical. The decor of a classy, low lite caf with great music, and swank city feel take over.

The menu is based on fresh ingredients and fluctuates seasonally and comes delivered on a clipboard upon seating. A companion menu has the wines, highlighting a great wine selection with a "food pairings" listing with each of the international selections. Wine lover's, look at the back of the wine menu for "wine flights tonight" and try several small portions of varieties linked to a region of wine making.

Our Staff's Picks:
Breakfast is "The Hemingway" all the way. In the evenings, the red lentil soup, and the melt in your mouth scallions, and anything on "the happy endings" menu for desserts.
