HISTORY
Sugar and Salt Woven Into the Fabric of Kealias History Kealia, a small community on the eastern shore of the Hawaiian island of Kauai, has its own unique history. Just like just about every other city, its known for certain things. While other cities claim to fame is being the birthplace of a famous person or home to the worlds biggest ball of twine, Kealias history is a little less flashy (if a giant ball of twine can even be called flashy). The name Kealia means salt encrustation or salt land, which gives a little insight into the history of a place with impressive natural beauty. If you rent a Kauai beach property and find yourself passing through the town of Kealia, you might not realize what an impact salt make on the ancient dwellers of this area. Salt had all sorts of uses in these times, ranging from domestic to medicinal to ceremonial. In Kealia, it wasnt like modern times where we know salt mostly as something you sprinkle on your food. The geography of Kealia was well-suited to creating salt flats. Low-lying shoreline areas became flooded with salt water from time to time when the tides were high. After the tide receded away from Kealia and back to the ocean, pockets of salt water would be left behind in the depressions that dotted the area around Kealia. This salt water would evaporate and leave behind salt flats. The Kealia locals would then harvest this salt. It was an instance of Mother Nature giving the locals what they needed to survive and thrive. Today, salt is still mined in the area around Kealia, but on a much larger scale and by using more modern technology to do so. Sugar also left its mark on Kealia history, just as it did on many places throughout Hawaii. Kealia was once a plantation town, with a sugar mill and a train depot. The Kealia Plantation, as it was known when it was built, was later renamed the MaKee Plantation, after its founder, James MaKee. The plantation existed until 1934, when it was dismantled and sent by rail to Lihue, where it became part of the Lihue Plantation. If you rent a Kauai beach property, you probably wont realize there is this much history in such a small community like Kealia. But just like every little town out there, every place has its story. Kealia is no different.

PACKING
Use Extra Care When Packing for Kealia Whenever you go on a trip, its always a good idea to think beforehand what you need to pack. On a vacation to Kealia on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, a good packing strategy is very important. Youre going to want to spend as much time in your Kauai rental property as possible, so the last thing you want to do is scrambling all over Kealia trying to source the items that you forgot back at home. Its essential when planning your packing strategy to take airline regulations into consideration. If you have liquids youre bringing to Kealia, you have two options. You can transfer them to containers three ounces or smaller, then place those containers in a one quart plastic bags. If you do this, you can carry the liquids with you on your carry-on. If you have containers larger than three ounces, put them in your checked luggage that you can get once you land in Kealia. Its still a good idea to put these containers in plastic bags. The last thing you want is to get to Kealia, open your suitcase, and find a bottle of perfume or shampoo worked its way out of the bottle and all over your belongings. And while were talking about regulations, make sure you check with the airline thats taking you to Kealia what their regulations are for carry-ons. Most airlines are the same, but you want to make sure that fancy wheeled suitcase is small enough to fit. You can usually check more than two bags at the counter, but youll likely have to pay a fee to do it. Thats not the best way to begin your Kealia vacation! As far as what to put in that carry-on and suitcase, its up to you to think of what youll be doing once you get to Kealia. If youre going to be spending a lot of time hiking around Kealias trails, make sure to bring appropriate clothing and hiking gear. And remember, its likely going to be hot, but youll also want to check the extended weather reports for Kealia. If its going to be ninety degrees and sunny in Kealia, youre not going to want to bring warm pants. And always bring sunscreen (of course in a plastic bag in your suitcase). Kealia, just like the rest of Hawaii, is very sunny. You dont want to have to spend your Kealia vacation inside your Kauai beach rental because you burned yourself on the first day!

ATTRACTIONS
Another Hidden Gem of Kauai: Kealia Beach As celebrities are to Hollywood, beaches are to the Hawaiian island of Kauai. With so much coastline hugging the Pacific Ocean, small little beaches like Kealia Beach tend to get overlooked. If you transplanted Kealia Beach somewhere on the mainland United States, it would likely be one of the most popular beaches around and a destination on its own for tourists. As it stands, part of Kealia Beachs allure is that it isnt a crowed, commercialized place. Most days, you can drive down from your Kauai rental property and find ample room to sunbathe, swim, or surf. Kealia Beach is just north of Kapaa, just off Highway 56. If youre staying on Kauais east coast, its a short drive that you cant miss. Kealia itself is a small town, but you couldnt tell by the quality of its beach. Of course, the quality doesnt come from the amenities. Kealia Beach is not a park, so there arent any facilities. But what Kealia Beach lacks in creature comforts, it makes up for in beauty. The beach itself is wide and curving, giving beachgoers an ample swath of sand to spread out on. This is important in the summer, when Kealias waves are higher and the surfers increase in numbers. When you get all those surfers with their gear, its nice to have a lot of space. Kealia Beach certainly has the room for everyone. You can also come to Kealia Beach with the family. Swimming is decent on the reef-protected North Shore, and picnics in the sand can be quite pleasant. Bring a football or frisbee to Kealia Beach and youve got a fun activity that will keep you busy for hours. And when youre worn out from chasing the football or frisbee, you can use the warm red sand of Kealia Beach to lay a towel down and relax in the sun. Remember to wear sunscreen, however, and dont fall asleep! More than one tourist has become bright red-skinned due to falling asleep on the beach. If you can pull yourself away from the luxury of your Kauai beach rental, do so and get to Kealia Beach. Its easy to find, not too crowded, and absolutely beautiful. Kealia Beach wont disappoint if youre looking for a place that isnt too touristy. It wont just be another hidden gem of Kauaiit will be the hidden gem of your vacation!

RESTAURANTS AND NIGHTLIFE
Kealias Best Dining May Be Right in Your Condo Kealias natural beauty is hard to beat, with beautiful green plants and gorgeous beaches. In fact, the view from your Kauai beach rental would probably be hard to beat. So instead of going out at night in Kealia to find somewhere to eat, why not stay right in your condo? You can either buy food and make dinner yourself, or you can order take out from a restaurant. No matter what you choose, youll have the luxury of watching a beautiful Kealia sunset while listening to the surf lap the shoreline. If you choose to go out, there are a lot of choices. If you venture in your rental car just a short drive south of Kealia, there is an abundance of restaurants. Youll find everything from a burger and fries to more traditional Hawaiian food. Kealia is located on Kauais eastern shore, and its only fitting that you can find a lot of first-rate seafood here. No matter if you like traditional fare like shrimp and scallops, or if you want to try something a little more exotic, youll find it here. Not everything can be brought back to your Kealia condo, so if you dont want to dine in, make sure and check first. If you like to make your own meals, you can also visit a market and bring the ingredients for your dinner back to Kealia. Since many of the Kauai condos have such beautiful kitchens, its almost a crime not to make at least one nice meal during your stay. If you do decide to stay in Kealia and make your own dinner, do yourself a favor and make a list with all the ingredients youll need. The worst is when youre preparing a meal and realize you forgot to get an ingredient or two. Youre left with two choices when that happens: either leave Kealia and grab the ingredients you forgot, or eat the meal without them. Either one isnt the best choice, especially since staying in Kealia is the most relaxing option. When youve got your meal in hand, make sure you also have your beverage of choice. Whether its beer, wine, or something else, make sure to pick that up in Kealia as well. After the meal, a relaxing nightcap under the stars is a great option. Since Kealia is so beautiful, youll want to soak up every last moment you can admiring it!
