Description
Unusual, intimate, a little wild, and quite unique! The Riverhouse is situated in the Wainiha Valley, one of the last strongholds of old Kauai. Wai is the Hawaiian word for water and water is indeed the focal point of this home. From the lanai, two watercourses are immediately evident: a stream cascading melodically into three pools and a wild rockstrewn river roiling its way down to the nearby ocean beach. The flowing waters immediately fill your senses with their peaceful music and are situated amidst the privacy of three incredibly verdant acres. The property has three available dwellings that are not rented separately. The main house is an artisan crafted dwelling with sandalwood floors and woodwork. It features a hand carved central pole. The open floor plan is airy and comfortable with unique decor. The kitchen becomes a central gathering spot with its cooking island and a gourmet kitchen. The dining nook provides a comfortable and intimate eating area. The bedroom has a queen bed and adjoins a spacious bathroom with a shower and an over-sized tub. The lanai overlooks the cascading water and flower-rimmed pools that are only 15 yards away. The spacious cottage is blessed with an outstanding view of the streams and the sound of the water creates a peaceful background lullaby. In the distance a waterfall cascades from the mountains. There is a queen size bed, a sleeping loft with a full size bed, and a full bathroom. And then there's "the Bird's Nest". Often this small screened gazebo is the favored sleeping option with its living-in-the-jungle feel, views of the nearby wild mountains and early morning serenade of birdsong. The "Bird's Nest" has a full sized bed and half bath. Two of A Riverhouse's acres are still primal jungle and one acre is gardened to include the flower- rimmed pools and a wild river plunge. There is a profusion of edible fruits including coconut, avocado, orange, lychee, banana, papaya, lime, tangerine, starfruit, mountain apple, longan and eggfruit. Gardenias, hibiscus, birds-of-paradise, orchids, gingers, tree ferns, heliconias, and others, grace the landscape with an amazing beauty and scents. Private, quiet and quite extraordinary, the Riverhouse is situated only one mile from the nearest beach. The Main House can be rented by itself for reduced rates during low season.

The River House is located in a most beautiful setting surrounding by verdant mountains with a distant waterfall. Privacy was excellent and the gardens were extremely well kept. The house was lovely and we enjoyed the separate small quarters for our children. Customer service was very good. We would highly recommend this rental to anyone interested in a stay in "paradise". rnrnThe beaches on Kauai are not well marked and it would have been nice to have had specific information regarding how to get to specific beaches. We had read that Tunnels Beach was a great place to snorkel and we knew it was nearby. However it wasn't until our last day that we actually figured out where it actually was (about 2 miles from The River House - turn right into a narrow beach access road about a half mile past mile marker 8) and what part of it was good for snorkeling. We went early, about 630 am, and had it pretty much all to ourselves. It was by far the best snorkeling we had during our 10 days in Hawaii. If you enjoy snorkeling, Tunnels Beach early before the crowds arrive is a must. I just wish we would have known this when we first arrived! rnWe enjoyed a boat ride tour of the NaPali Coast, were awed by Waimea Canyon, and enjoyed the many beaches on the Island. (Anini Beach is another beach we'd recommend to families for swimming and snorkeling). Swimming off the Hanalai Pear is also a great activity for children who swim well.

The Riverhouse... what a perfect place to relax, breathe, and to call home for a limited time. The frest fruit on the property, ChuChee, and the private excape were only a few things that be in our hearts and memories forever. We wish it never ended, and we are looking forward to visiting again soon. Maholo for anabsolutely amazing place to stay on an even better vacation.
