About Honokowai Vacation Rentals

Honokowai is located in a quiet area of West Maui where you can enjoy the warm breezes, uncrowded beaches and swaying palms yet you're just minutes away from upscale dining and shopping as well as an abundance of fun ocean and land activities. Set at the northern tip of the Kaanapali Resort area, Honokowai is an ideal vacation destination for those who love sunny days and beautiful beaches.

Things To Do

Snorkeling and body boarding are popular in this region including at Honokowai Beach Park, a nice place for a swim amid colorful sea life. The beach itself is a bit rocky and narrow though you can find some openings in the reef to explore interesting coral formations and marine life habitat. This is also a great location for seeing Hawaii's majestic humpback whales breaching offshore during the winter months, or get a closer look at these gentle giants on a whale watching tour. Head over the resort areas of Kaanapali Beach and Kapalua Beach to enjoy more pristine beaches and plenty of options for activities from snorkeling and scuba diving to boat tours and parasailing. Black Rock at Kaanapali is an exceptional snorkeling and scuba diving area. Golfers will enjoy the spectacular golf courses in the nearby resort areas of Kaanapali and Kapalua. The Royal Kaanapali Golf Course has hosted LPGA events and takes in sweeping views of West Maui. Notable is the beautiful oceanfront green on hole No.5, and the 18th hole has water on one side from tee to green making it one of Arnold Palmer's favorites. After your day's adventures grab some fresh seafood at the local fish market and throw it on the barbecue for your own perfect Hawaii evening.

Nearby Beaches

Visit Honokowai Beach Park for exceptional snorkeling with lots of colorful fish and frequent sightings of Hawaiian green sea turtles. The park has a nice lawn, benches, barbecues, restrooms and showers making it a great place for a relaxing picnic and day at the beach. There is even a small playground with swings and monkey bars for the kids to play on. The beach has both sandy and rocky areas with a coral reef farther out where it is still fairly shallow. This can be a great swimming beach for kids when the ocean is calm, and there are also some interesting tidepools to explore. More great beaches are found throughout this region including Kaanapali to the south and Kapalua to the north.

Restaurants

A favorite local eatery is Honokowai Okazuya and Deli, a great nice to grab some sandwiches for a picnic at the beach or take back to your vacation rental. In addition to deli sandwiches they offer vegetarian entrees, pasta dishes and salads. Also check out the local fish market and health food store for food supplies in Honokowai. There is no shortage of fine dining at nearby Kaanapali and Kapalua resorts, and with great ocean views. Try Merriman's Kapalua where you can enjoy the food artistry of chef Peter Merriman, one of the pioneers of Hawaii Regional Cuisine. Artisanal and farmhouse cheeses and an array of locally grown specialty foods comprise their farm-to-table menu, and there is a great sunset view from the outdoor lanai. Desserts at Merriman's are exquisite with such treats as lilikoi and Kula strawberry caramel mousse, and white chocolate-filled malasadas with Maui oma caramel dipping sauce. For a mid-day rejuvenating meal try the hearty burgers and sandwiches at Leilani's on the Beach located along the Kaanapali Beachwalk.

Shopping

The local commercial area of Honokowai includes a supermarket, health food store, coffee shop, dive shop and some restaurants as well as a deli. Some of the best shopping in this region can be found at the posh resort areas of Kapalua and Kaanapali.
