About Huelo Vacation Rentals

Huelo is a small town that sits about 500 feet above sea level amidst the lush and tropical setting of Maui's northeast shore. Far from the population centers of Kahului and Lahaina, Huelo's tranquility has given it the moniker "the little Hawaiian village forgotten by time."The town is located along the road to "Heavenly Hana."

Things To Do

From sunning on the beach to horseback riding through verdant mountain landscapes there is plenty to do in the Huelo area. Hikers will enjoy a walk along the Waikamoi Ridge Forest Trail and Overlook which is located just past mile marker 9 on the Hana Highway. The trail is less than one mile long and provides a leisurely stroll through a tropical jungle of ferns, bamboo and native forest, taking about a half hour to walk as you enjoy views from the scenic overlooks. Near Hana town is the Garden of Eden Arboretum and Botanical Garden featuring many exotic plants and trees of the South Pacific region, and also Kahunu Garden featuring Pacific Islands ethnobotanical collections as well as an important Hawaiian heiau (place of worship) called Piilanihale. The historic Kaulanapueo Church in Huelo is a Protestant Church which was built of coral and stone in 1853 in a New England architectural style.

Nearby Beaches

For a nice snorkeling beach head over to Baldwin Beach Park, a picture-perfect beach with a lifeguard and good areas for swimming as well as a lagoon area ideal for small children. Nearby is Hookipa Beach where you can watch the expert windsurfers and kitesurfers ride the waves. At Mile Marker 14 on the Hana Highway is the picturesque Honomanu Bay, which is the first accessible beach along this route after Hookipa Beach. Honomanu Bay is set in a lush valley that provides memorable scenery. The water here can be fairly rough and there are rip currents and no lifeguard so swimming is not recommended.

Restaurants

Drive over to Paia town to choose from many nice restaurants featuring a wide variety of cuisines. More dining choices can be found in nearby Haiku, Makawao and the Maui Upcountry towns of Ulupalakua, Keokea, Kula and Pukalani. In Hana town you can enjoy fine dining at Travaasa Hana which offers a Polynesian-style "Hana Fusion"cuisine.

Shopping

Shopping is limited in this area though a drive to the east provides interesting shops in the towns of Paia as well as Haiku, Makawao and other towns in Maui's Upcountry region. For large shopping malls and department stores visit Kahului which is Maui's principal shopping district.

Getting Around

Renting a car is recommended when visiting Huelo so you can explore area beaches and visit local attractions from the waterfalls of Hana to the summit crater of Haleakala National Park.

Weather and Ocean Conditions

Temperatures in Huelo are relatively mild all year around with summer temperatures averaging around 80 F and sometimes rising into the low 90s with tropical trade winds providing a comfortable, cooling effect. Winter temperatures average in the 70s. Casual and beach attire is appropriate for most activities though if you are visiting higher elevation areas bring something warmer as the temperatures may be significantly cooler. The winter months typically bring more rain on the north and east shores than on the west and south shores, which keeps everything lush and green. Inexperienced swimmers are advised to always swim and enjoy ocean activities at lifeguarded beaches. Winter months can bring big surf on exposed northern shorelines while summer conditions are often very calm. Like all Hawaii beaches, conditions can change at any time of year and you should always use caution before entering the ocean. Check with lifeguards before going in the water to learn about the safest areas to swim and enjoy the water activities you choose.
