Probably the most well known landmark in the Hawaiian Islands, Diamond Head is the synonymous with Waikiki Beach. Hundreds if not thousands of pictures are taken with the famous Diamond Head in the back ground.
Known as Leahi by the Hawaiians, Diamond Head was given its English name by British sailors in the 19th century when they mistook calcite crystals imbedded in the rock for diamonds. The dormant volcanic tuff cone is now a United States Monument.
Located on the western shore of Oahu the slope of Diamond Head is home to many wealthy land owners. Just steps from Waikiki, the Honolulu Zoo, Aquarium and Kapiolani Park Diamond Head are a focal point for many activities. Each year the Honolulu Marathon commences at the base of Diamond Head. Off shore is some of the best surf and wind surfing on the island. Kapiolani Park hosts concerts in the amphitheater, tennis and archery. The Honolulu Zoo and Aquarium are great family attractions.
And if you like to hike, on man made trails, you can make your way to the highest peak of Diamond Head and catch a breathtaking 180 degree ocean view of the west end of Oahu, Waikiki and Kahala.
