In 1898 a businessman named Walter Dillingham opened a small hotel called Haleiwa, meaning house of the Frigate bird in Hawaiian. But the North Shore of Oahu gained world wide popularity in the early 1960s when surfers discovered its huge winter ocean swells. What once was a small plantation town grew in to the largest commercial center on the North Shore. Many of the original buildings were preserved giving the town an old Hawaii feeling.

The historic Rainbow Bridge over the Anahulu River marks the northern entrance to old Haleiwa Town. There you will find small shops, eateries and many galleries. Two beach parks surround the small boat harbor located in Waialua Bay, Haleiwa Beach Park located to the north and Haleiwa Alii Beach Park located to the south.

There are many great surf spots located up and down the coast of the north shore. In the winter, when the surf is breaking, surfers and spectators from all over the world rent the many cottages and houses along the coast and spend the season there. Many well known companies sponsor surf meets at famous beaches like Sunset Beach, Pipeline and Waimea Bay. In the summer the ocean is calm and there are many coves and reefs to dive and snorkel. Deep sea fishing is also popular.
