Historians are not sure just when Honolulu was first settled by Polynesian migrants from the archipelago, but some think it may be back as far as the 12th century. King Kamehameha I, after conquering Oahu, moved his family from the Island of Hawaii to Waikiki in 1804 and then relocated his court to what is now known as downtown Honolulu in 1809. In 1845 Kamehameha III moved the capital of the Hawaiian kingdom from Lahaina on Maui to Honolulu. He built historic buildings such as Iolani Palace, Saint Andrews Cathedral and Aliiolani Hale. Trade flourished and many merchant sailors and missionaries established businesses in downtown Honolulu.
Much of Oahus rich history is found in Honolulu. Some of the many places to visit are the historic Iolani Palace, Pearl Harbor Memorial, the Bishop Museum, and the Honolulu Academy of Arts. The University of Hawaii campus is also located in Honolulu in Manoa. The white sand beaches of Waikiki and Ala Moana Beach Park are family friendly. Surf spots are located up and down the south western coast line. All of which the famed Duke Kanamoku surfed. A number of deep sea fishing charters at available for rent at Kewalo Basin, as well as sunset cruises.
Ala Moana Shopping Center is located in the heart of Honolulu. Once the largest shopping center in the world it is home to many upscale shops and great restaurants. Downtown Honolulu where the financial district and old China Town are located you can visit the fish markets, grocers, herbal and tea shops and the many art galleries and antique shops. Small gourmet restaurants and night spots are tucked in among shops. Aloha Tower Marketplace is located at Honolulu Harbor where many of the first trading vessels landed in the late 1700s. Major cruise ships still moor there today. The marketplace has a mixture of shops, restaurants and entertainment all over looking the harbor.
