Makaha is a small and quiet community on Oahu's scenic
and sunny western shoreline. With close access to beautiful beaches,
shopping and dining, staying in a Makaha condo provides everything you
need for a wonderful Hawaii vacation.
Things To Do
Makaha offers
many land and sea activities and is home to one of Hawaii's famed
surfing beaches, Makaha Beach. The championship Makaha Resort & Golf
Club course has been named as one of Oahu's best golf courses and
provides challenging play as well as a driving range, pro shop and
clubhouse at the base of the Waianae mountains. From the boat harbor in
nearby Waianae you can embark on various adventures from snorkeling
tours to fishing and scuba diving or just sight seeing. During the
winter months whale watching tours get up close and personal with
humpback whales. Drive west from Makaha to see the scenery at Kaena
Point which is Oahu's westernmost point with fun coastal hikes and
tidepools to explore as well as a sea cave, stone arches and frequent
dolphin sightings. Head east from Makaha over to Waikiki for more
adventures including surfing and outrigger canoe rides. Visit Pearl
Harbor to see the USS Memorial, and take a drive through downtown
Honolulu to see Iolani Palace and many other historical buildings.
Nearby Beaches
Makaha
Beach is renowned among surfers for the quality of the breaking waves
and also how incredibly large the waves can get during the winter months
when surfing contests are held. Smaller surf conditions, particularly
during the summer months, are fun for everyone at Makaha and this is a
popular area for stand up paddle boarding, bodyboarding and snorkeling.
The expansive Makaha Beach is also a great place to just relax and enjoy
the Hawaiian day with restrooms, showers and picnic tables. Swimming is
best in the center area of the beach where the seafloor is sandy. An
offshore scuba diving site called Makaha Caverns is renown for its caves
and arches. To the west at Kaena Point State Park is a sandy beach
bordered by sand dunes between two rocky points at Keawaula Bay, also
called Yokohama Beach.
Restaurants
Makaha has some places to eat
including fast food as well as a grocery store. In the nearby town of
Waianae there are more dining options including Kahumana Organic Farm
and Cafe which makes great ahi (tuna) wraps, delicious salads and
gourmet desserts. At the nearby Ko Olina Resort are some excellent
upscale dining options, and many more restaurants in Kapolei. Head over
to the Aloha Marketplace for dining and entertainment overlooking
Honolulu Harbor, and explore the restaurants of Waikiki and downtown
Honolulu.
Shopping
Makaha has a small commercial district with
convenience stores as well as a supermarket and some small retail
stores. There are also some stores in nearby Waianae. For upscale
shopping visit the boutique gift stores at Ko Olina Resort. A bit
farther is the bustling commercial district of Kapolei. Visit downtown
Honolulu including the Chinatown district for more fun shops to explore,
as well as the Waikiki waterfront lined with merchants offering
everything from designer labels to Hawaiian souvenirs and collectibles.
Getting Around
A
rental car is recommended when staying in Makaha condos so you can
explore the many things to do and see in the region from golf and great
beaches to hikes and more, as well as day trips to Honolulu and the
north and windward shores. Makaha is about 35 miles northwest of
downtown Honolulu. Most major populated areas of Oahu can also be
reached on the public transit system known as "TheBus."
Weather and Ocean Conditions
Makaha
is known for its sunny weather on Oahu's leeward (western) coast which
is the driest side of the island. Makaha temperatures range from about
75 to 90 degrees F. throughout the year, on the cooler side during the
winter months and warmer during the summer with trade winds providing a
pleasant, cooling effect. Rain showers here are typically very brief and
light with ample sunshine even on the rainier days.
Ocean
conditions vary each day and through the seasons. Typically Oahu's
western and northern shore will have their calmest waters during the
summer months while the south shore will enjoy generally calm waters
during the winter. Some beaches provide more protection from the open
ocean than others, and if the waves are too big at the beach you visit
then you may be able to find a more sheltered beach where water
activities are safe. For swimming and ocean activities visit Oahu's
lifeguarded beaches. Obey all posted warnings and ask lifeguards about
the conditions on that day and the best areas for the ocean activities
you choose.
