About Punaluu Condo Rentals

Punaluu is located along a scenic stretch of Oahu's eastern (windward) shore set beneath the lush and tropical beauty of the Koolau mountains and beautiful beaches, a region so picturesque it is used in movie scenes. With close access to great dining, shopping and entertainment, a Punaluu condo provides everything you need for a relaxing and enjoyable Hawaii vacation.

Things To Do
Oahu's eastern and northern shores have numerous exceptional bays and beaches as well as charming towns where you can shop and dine. Head south to enjoy the ocean at Lanikai Beach, Kailua Bay (great for water sports) and miles of sandy beach at Waimanalo with a scenic backdrop of the steep and green, furrowed Koolau Mountains. Drive up to the north shore to see Sunset Beach, Haleiwa, Banzai Pipeline and Waimea Bay where world-class surfing competitions are held every winter. Haleiwa town is known as the "gateway to the north shore" and a fun place to explore the shops and eateries.

One of Hawaii's most visited attractions is the Polynesian Cultural Center which is located just north of Punaluu in Laie. The PCC includes a series of themed villages highlighting the cultures of Pacific Island nations with interactive exhibits. They also have an IMAX theater and host an elaborate dinner show and Hawaiian luau feast.

Nearby Beaches
Snorkeling can be good at Punaluu Beach Park when the ocean is relatively calm though it's not the best swimming beach due to the coral reef and shallow water. Another snorkeling spot in this area is Kaneohe Bay where you can take in views of Chinaman's Hat (Mokolii Islet), and also try stand up paddle boarding or kayaking. Farther south is Kailua Bay which is popular for a variety of water activities due to its typically very hospitable waters with vendors nearby renting water sports equipment. Nearby is the picture postcard Lanikai Beach with its bright white sand and pristine water and scenic views.

Restaurants
Dining in the Punaluu area won't disappoint including Papa Ole's Kitchen just north of town where they serve up delicious breakfasts dishes like macadamia nut pancakes. On the south side of town feast on pork ribs and beef brisket at Uncle Bobo's Smoked BBQ and then top it off with shave ice. Nearby is the Shrimp Shack food truck where fresh seafood is grilled daily along with other local favorites. Keneke's Grill in Punaluu is the place to go for mouth watering Kalua pig as well as great burgers. They also have hearty plate lunches which are great to take to the beach. Sample some delicious sweetbread at the Punaluu Bake Shop. Head over to Kailua or Kaneohe for more dining options including a food court at the Windward Mall. To pick up some fresh fruits and veggies check out the Kailua Town Farmers on Sunday mornings where you can meet farmers, sample prepared foods and listen to live entertainment.

Shopping
This region provides lots of shopping options including collectibles and other gifts at the Punaluu Bake Shop. To the south in Kaneohe is a vibrant commercial district including the Windward Mall with more than 100 merchants including Hawaii-owned stores and national brands. There are also movie theaters, entertainment and a play area for children. A bit farther south is Kailua town with a walkable downtown district including boutique gift shops, art galleries and department stores.

Getting Around
A rental car is recommended when staying in a Punaluu condo so you can visit local beaches and attractions and also enjoy day trips to the north shore as well as Honolulu. Most of Oahu's major towns are serviced by the island's public transit system known as "TheBus." Honolulu Airport is about 45 minutes driving from Punaluu.

Weather and Ocean Conditions
Punaluu weather is typically in the 70 to 85 degrees F. range throughout the year. Sunny days and mild temperatures are the norm with balmy trade winds making Punaluu an excellent vacation destination. Winter sees more rain than summer months, and Oahu's north and east shores a bit wetter and cooler than the south and west shores.

Ocean conditions change daily with many days of very calm water, particularly during the summer months. Winter can intermittently bring big surf from the north along with strong currents. Some beaches are more protected from the open ocean than others. For swimming and other ocean activities visit lifeguarded beaches and ask water safety personnel about the safest areas for the water sports you choose. Mornings are often best for snorkeling as the trade winds may blow a bit stronger in the afternoon.
