Vacation review for Kai Lani 3 Bdrm in Poipu, Kauai:

Generally, our vacation was wonderful. We came home well rested and tanned. But, ... for the amount of money we spent for this house ($1 500 for 10 days), I expected more. On the plus side: Location was perfect. Grounds, pool were great (except for the falling coconut hazard). House size, layout, furnishings were above average. On the down side: Again, for the price I expect the maintenance to be held to a higher standard. These may have not been an issue if I was only paying half as much for this house. - The locking mechanism on the front door was binding, we could not open the door from outside with the key. - The screen on the door to the lanai would fall out of the track every other time we used it. Very frustrating. - Some windows were missing bug screens. This can be a problem in a house with no A/C. - Several receptacles had failed internally, a cord would fall out when plugged in. - Many lights, both inside and out, were burned out. The pool lights did not work at all. - There was no stereo and/or CD player. There was only an empty slot in the cabinet and a pile of loose speaker wires. (The rental management company did replace the stereo the same day we brought it to their attention, but only 2 of the 4 speakers worked.) - The remote garage door opener barely worked and eventually fell apart. - The faucets in the 1/2 bath downstairs did not work. - There were more than a dozen ripe coconuts in each palm tree on the ocean side of the house. At least 10 fell while we were there. One of them fell while I was in the hammock and hit the hammock within 1-2 foot of my head. This is a serious safety hazard. - To our knowledge, none of the house plants were watered at any time during our stay. Most of the plants looked to be in pretty bad shape. In the kitchen: - The knives were very dull. We couldn't find one that could cleanly cut a tomato. - There were a total of only 3 wine glasses. - The coffee maker was way past its prime. The lid had somehow overheated and melted. - The other plates, glasses, and kitchen utensils were fine. The bath towels were discolored and stained. There is a large aquarium in the living room. It had recently overheated causing an algae bloom, requiring the tank to be bleached and restocked. It also prevented us from lighting the tank at night. They were doing what they could to recover it, but we were unable to enjoy it during our visit. There is a very large construction project in the very early stages directly across the street. It is a housing development with a planned 1500 houses. We were awoken each morning by the BEEP-BEEP-BEEP of the heavy equipment doing dirt work. This work also generated more than the normal amount of red dust. This will continue to be a problem through at least 2010. I probably could have called the rental management company and had many of these issues resolved, but the last thing I wanted to do was spend my vacation on the phone griping to somebody about light bulbs or towels or wine glasses. While I am on vacation, it is somebody else's job to look after those details for me. If you have made it this far, you probably think that we had a horrible stay at Kai Lani. Not so. We had a wonderful vacation. It is just that we were willing to spend a great deal of money for the best, and our expectations were very high. The location was without equal, but the facility was sub-standard. We could have had a vacation that was the same or better for less than ½ the money. If location is your most important consideration, money is no object, and you aren't easily annoyed by minor inconveniences, then Kai Lani would be wonderful for your next vacation. Otherwise, you would probably want to look for a better bargain elsewhere.
