Your Hawaii villa puts you on the best beaches in the world!

May 17th, 2008

Your Hawaii villa is near some of the world’s best beaches!  Here’s a sample of the top beaches on the Big Island of Hawaii:

MacKenzie State Park - This park is located on the Puna Coastline which is extremely rugged and is subject to strong tradewinds and currents. Trees provide shade and the leaves have turned the hard ground into a soft, natural carpet. There is no ocean access because the park sits on small pali (cliff) about 20-40′ above the ocean.
Mahukona Beach Park - The bay is fairly deep and is a good stop to take a dip or snorkel on a long drive around the Big Island, but there are no lifeguards. Snorkel and swim on calm ocean days without heavy tradewinds or large waves. There is good whale watching from the park from about December to about mid-April.
Old Airport State Recreation Area - The shoreline of Old A is great for picnicking with many pavilions and heliotrope trees for shade. The beach is long, wide and made of sand & coral rubble. There are two bathrooms with showers located at both ends of the beach for your convenience. Surfing or body boarding is possible depending on the waves.
Pahoehoe Beach Park - This park features a nice lawn with lots of shade and a beautiful ocean view. There are many benches facing the ocean available, but no picnic tables are provided. The only beach is tiny and made of sand and coral rubble so bring a chair. The best time to visit this park is during the weekdays!
Pololu Valley Overlook & Beach - The scenic point overlooks the beautiful Pololu Valley and offers a breathtaking look along the North Kohala Coastline. It will take about 20 minutes to reach the valley floor from the top. The return trip up from the beach will take 30-40 minutes depending on how many photos and breaks you take.
Punalu’u Beach Park - Punalu’u Beach is Hawaii’s easiest to reach black sand beach! Lots of Green Sea Turtles and occasional Hawksbill Turtles frequent this black sand beach. The sea turtles are endangered species. Take only pictures and DO NOT TOUCH THEM!!! Don’t expect to have this black sand beach all to yourself!
Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Park - The park was once one of the religious centers on Hawaii. There is a “backcountry tour” that covers a large section of the park to the southern boundary. There are heiaus, burial caves, a lava tube that you can enter plus the remains of an ancient coastal village. You can borrow the trail guide for the coastal day hike.
Spencer Beach Park - The park has ample parking. Many picnic tables are scattered along the perimeter of the beach. Some large kiawe trees bordering the white sand provide shade for the tables and beachgoers. A large stone pavilion located at the southern end. The beach is a good place for kids to swim and it’s lifeguarded!
No matter where on the Big Island you rent a Hawaii villa, when you’re ready for the beach experience of your life come to the Hawaii travel.

Rent house Oahu for terrific marine wildlife adventure!

May 17th, 2008

Submarine Dives:
When you rent house Oahu you can play Jules Verne and experience the underwater world from the comfort of a submarine, which will take you on an adventure below the surface in high-tech comfort. The entire trip is narrated as you watch tropical fish and sunken ships just outside the sub.  If swimming’s not your thing, this is a great way to see Hawaii’s spectacular sea life. Shuttle boats to the sub leave from Hilton Hawaiian Village Pier. The cost is $80 for adults (book on the Internet for just $68), $42 ($36 booked online) for kids 12 and under (children must be at least 36 in. tall). Call Atlantis Submarines (tel. 800/548-6262 or 808/973-9811; www.go-atlantis.com) to reserve. A word of warning: The ride is safe for everyone, but skip it if you suffer from claustrophobia.

Whale-Watching:
From December to April, 45-foot humpback whales — Hawaii’s most impressive visitors — come to spend the winter. They make the journey from Alaska to calve and mate in Hawaii’s calm, warm waters. Once nearly hunted to extinction, humpback whales are now protected by federal law. The mammals may not be approached by any individual or watercraft within 100 yards.
Whales can frequently be seen off the island on calm days. If you spot the familiar spout of water — a sign the mammal is exhaling — there’s a good chance you’ll see the whale on the surface. If you’re in a car, please pull over, as many accidents have occurred when visitors try to spot whales and drive at the same time.

Sportfishing:
Kewalo Basin, between the Honolulu International Airport and Waikiki, is the main location for charter fishing boats on Oahu. From Waikiki, take Kalakaua Ewa (west) beyond Ala Moana Center; Kewalo Basin is on the left, across from Ward Centre. Look for charter boats all in a row in their slips; on lucky days, the captains display the catch of the day in the afternoon. You can also take TheBus no. 19 or 20 (Airport).  The best way to book a sportfishing charter when you rent house Oahu is through the experts; the best booking desk in the state is Sportfish Hawaii (tel. 877/388-1376 or 808/396-2607; www.sportfishhawaii.com), which not only books boats on Oahu, but on all islands. These fishing vessels have been inspected and must meet rigorous criteria to guarantee that you will have a great time. Prices range from $721 to $914 for a full-day exclusive charter (you, plus five friends, get the entire boat to yourself), $550 to $625 for a half-day exclusive, or from $170 for a full-day share charter (you share the boat with five other people).

Hawaii accommodation for volcanic adventure!

May 17th, 2008

Scientists are also keeping an eye on Mauna Loa, which has been swelling since its last eruption in 1983. If there’s a new eruption, there could be a fast-moving flow down the southwest side of the island, possibly into South Kona or Kau.  Hawaii accommodation puts you right on the scene of the action; with luck, the volcano will still be streaming rivers of red lava when you visit the park, but a continuous eruption of this length (more than 2 decades) is setting new ground, so to speak. Kilauea continues to perplex volcanologists because most major eruptions in the past have ended abruptly after only several months. But neither Mother Nature nor Madame Pele (the volcano goddess) runs on a schedule. The volcano could be shooting fountains of lava hundreds of feet into the air on the day you arrive, or it could be completely quiet — there are no guarantees. On many days, the lava flows right by accessible roads, and you can get as close as the heat will allow; sometimes, however, the flow is in underground tubes where you can’t see it, or miles away from the nearest access point, visible only in the distance. Always ask the park rangers for advice before you set out on any lava-viewing expeditions.

Volcano Vocabulary — The volcano has its own unique, poetic vocabulary that describes in Hawaiian what cannot be said so well in English. The lava that looks like swirls of chocolate cake frosting is called pahoehoe (pa-hoy-hoy); it results from a fast-moving flow that curls artistically as it moves. The big, blocky, jumbled lava that looks like a chopped-up parking lot is called aa (ah-ah); it’s caused by lava that moves slowly, pulling apart as it overruns itself.  Access Points from your Hawaii accommodation — Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is 29 miles from Hilo, on Hawaii Belt Road (Hwy. 11). If you’re staying in Kailua-Kona, it’s 100 miles, or about a 2 1/2-hour drive, to the park. At press time, admission was still $10 per vehicle, but the park was proposing to double that to $20 per car in 2008; once you pay the fee, you can come and go as often as you want for 7 days. Hikers and bicyclists pay $5; bikes are allowed only on roads and paved trails.

Kauai vacation homes atop nature’s greatest wonders!

May 17th, 2008

Think about how Kauai vacation homes lie atop the marvelous wonders of nature!  The Hawaiian Ridge-Emperor Seamounts Chain of mostly underwater volcanic mountains extends from the Big Island of Hawaii to Alaska. For 70 million years this plate has moved slowly and created 125 volcanoes. Remarkable enough, but if we take a look further back in time when Kauai was barely a twinkle in Mother Nature’s eye, we learn that the unique locations of the Hawaiian islands is due to an abrupt detour the Pacific Plate took over 43 million years ago. Where it had formerly moved in a northerly direction, it suddenly shifted westward. One explanation is that the collision of the India landmass into the Asian continent caused the seismic shift. In any case, amazingly this detour settled the plate over a “hotspot” which began to form the Hawaiian Islands. This explanation matches the mythology of Pele, Hawaii’s fire goddess, who is credited with the creation of the islands. Scientist find it rather remarkable that somehow the ancients had a sense of what was bubbling beneath the surface and even gave a name and identity to what was causing the fuss.

It wasn’t until 1963 that a Canadian, J. Tuzo Wilson, suggested that the line-up of the Hawaiian islands was likely to to a plate shift over a stationery hotspot. In other words, all the islands originated from the same source. Kauai bubbled underwater for some 10 million years before it emerged 5 million years ago. The current highest peaks on the island, Wai’ale’ale (5,148 feet) and Kawaikini (5,243 feet) are already only half of what they were in their heyday. Meanwhile, a new island, Lo’ihi, is being formed off the coast of the Big Island and is rumored to emerge above water in about 7,000 short years. (Realtors are already getting excited about renting Kauai vacation homes there.) Although completely submerged and still a youngster, Lo’ihi is already taller than Mt. St. Helens was when it erupted. Measured from the ocean floor, Maui’s Haleakala is the most massive mountain on earth.  All this because India bumped into Asia 43 million years ago!

Oahu vacation rentals for water sport fun!

May 17th, 2008

Oahu vacation rentals are the way to go for great fun in the waves!  Here’s some tips from Hawaiianbeachrentals.com on the best places to swim and windsurf:

Swimming:
For a quiet, peaceful place to swim, Malaekahana Bay, near Kahuku, is one of the best Oahu beaches. This mile-long, white-sand, crescent-shaped beach is about a 90-minute drive and a million miles from the crowds at Waikiki. To get there, take Kamehameha Highway past Laie and follow the signs to Malaekahana State Recreational Area. Or take TheBus no. 52 (Circle Island). Another good swimming beach is Lanikai; secluded and calm, this beach is great for families. From Waikiki, take TheBus no. 56 or 57 (Kailua), and then transfer to the shuttle.
Water-Skiing
To learn to water-ski, or to just go out and have a good time, call the oldest water-ski company in Hawaii, Hawaii Water Sports, Koko Marina Shopping Center (tel. 808/395-3773; www.hawaiiwatersportscenter.com; TheBus: 58). Lessons and boat rental are $59 for 20 minutes and $79 for a half hour, including the boat and all equipment rental (maximum of five people).

Windsurfing:
Windward Oahu’s Kailua Beach is the home of champion and pioneer windsurfer Robbie Naish; it’s also the best place for Oahu vacation rentals to learn to windsurf. The oldest and most established windsurfing business in Hawaii is Naish Hawaii/Naish Windsurfing Hawaii, 155-A Hamakua Dr., Kailua (tel. 800/767-6068 or 808/262-6068; www.naish.com). The company offers everything: sales, rentals, instruction, repair, and free advice on where to go when the wind and waves are happening. Private lessons start at $75 for one, $100 for two for a 60- to 90-minute lesson (depending on your skill level); beginner equipment rental is $25 for 2 hours and $35 for a full day. Kite-surfing lessons are also available ($100 for 1 1/2 hr.). Kite board rentals are $25 a day. Kailua Sailboards & Kayaks, 130 Kailua Rd., a block from the Kailua Beach Park (tel. 808/262-2555; www.kailuasailboards.com), offers 3-hour small-group lessons ($79 per person, including all gear, plus lunch) and rentals of windsurfing equipment, surfboards, snorkel gear, and ocean kayaks.  Windsurfer wannabes on the North Shore can contact Surf-N-Sea, 62-595 Kamehameha Hwy. Haleiwa (tel. 808/637-9887; www.surfnsea.com), which offers equipment rental ($12 an hour or $45 for the day), as well as private lessons (beginning at $65 for 2-3 hr.).

A Kauai vacation rental for bird watching deluxe!

May 17th, 2008

Gooney birds, mollymauks, boobies, auks, nene. Don’t mistake all this chatter for grammar school name calling until you realize these affectionate titles are given to certain species of seabirds roosting at Kilauea Point, a fabulous Kauai vacation rental attraction. With its position as the northernmost point in Hawaiian, as well as fortunate lack of predators (Kauai did not receive the gift of the mongoose), Kilauea provides visitors with the rare opportunity to observe these nomads of the sea up close.  How did the amazing albatross come to be known as “gooney?” Like the red-footy “booby,” the bird was often disrespected when it happened upon a sailing ship and wasn’t afraid of what it found onboard - humans. Also, because these birds spend the majority of their lives at sea, sometimes as long at eight years at a stretch, when coming ashore for the first time they are probably much like sailors on leave; their behavior is a little off.

The steep cliffs at Kilauea provide the albatross with a natural runway and jumping off point. It is here they come to mate and roost between their lengthy flights. Although takeoff is a challenge to these great birds, once in flight they can soar for days on their nine to twelve foot wingspans, even sleeping while mid-air. Some have flown as far as 10,000 miles without stopping! The nesting and mating rituals of the Laysan Albatross is animated and distinctive enough to draw visitors during mating season to their roosting sites near a Kauai vacation rental in the Princeville area where these indiscreet birds dance, preen and sing regardless of who is watching!  The telescope at the Kilauea visitors center was trained on one nesting couple tucked into the cliffs on the left side of the point. But on the other side of the lookout, it was easy to see the birds congregate with the naked eye. Here, dotting the landscape are numerous protected species such as, Hawaiian nene geese, brown boobies, red-tailed tropicbirds, wedge-tailed shearwaters, and great frigate birds. Birds are not the only attraction of Kilauea Point. The picturesque lighthouse was erected in 1913 as a guiding beacon for ships from the Orient, it was dedicated May 1, 1913 “with a luau to which everyone in Kilauea town was invited.” The original lens was built in France for $12,000 and was turned by clock-like mechanism operated by a massive weight, cable and pulley that had to be wound every 3.5 hours. In 1930 the oil vapor lamp was replaced by an electric model, and eventually in 1976, the Coast Guard decommissioned the lighthouse and installed an automated electronic beacon. In 1979, the lighthouse was placed on the Register of National Historic Places and on February 15, 1985 it became the 425th Refuge in the National Wildlife Refuge System.
One more gem lying just off the point is a little Mukuae`ae.” Crashing waves force a blowhole to spout which brings rainbows in its wake, providing the jewel for the crown at the “top of Hawaii,” Kilauea Point.

Kauai condos for a unique adventure in wonderland!

May 17th, 2008

Kauai has a unique identity, and Kauai condos are your smart option to explore this wonderland.  As the oldest member of the Hawaiian islands, it has had five million years to grow, alter, adapt and mature into a majestic idyll where four thousand foot cliffs dripping with waterfalls jut into the wild blue heavens and cast evening shadows on pristine, turquoise beaches foaming with often immense surf. The “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” dances with the colors of a high desert and lures hikers and gawkers with over forty miles of hiking trails. Kalalau Trail, an eleven mile trek that begins where the road ends at Na Pali cliffs reveals views so stunning that it could motivate a couch potato to begin a fitness program, for no slacker could handle the arduous journey. For those less hardy, the beaches between Hanalei and Na Pali offer unparalleled splendor. Near Ha’ena State Park are the famous Maniniholo Wet and Dry Caves purported built my Menehune, Hawaii’s mythical little people, during an attempt to capture an evil spirit. Ka Ulu O Laka Heiau is a temple perched up the cliffs to honor the goddess of Hula and Limahuli National Tropical Gardens is a splendid display of native plants and terraced gardens.

The wonders of Kauai are legendary. Though you would never be more than twelve linear miles from the sea at any point on the island, the amount of fascinating terrain and natural wonders packed into this spectacular dot on the map in the middle of the sea is astounding. To do it right, you need a car. Using Kauai condos as your base, driving the island is easy, accommodating, and a delight in itself. But there are limited roadways off the main thoroughfares and access to many (perhaps most) of the true wonders of Kauai is not possible by car. Overcome that handicap by booking a trek tour into the jungles and rainforests, or hire an ATV to take you off-road. Consider renting a kayak to paddle the river and don’t forget to bring a surf or boogie board to navigate the often outrageous waves. Certainly take a helicopter to catch a breathtaking glimpse of the emerald green coast, shimmering waterfalls and deep canyons. Sturdy hiking shoes and even sturdier legs are obligatory gear from Sleeping Giant to Barking Sands to the Kalakua Trail. All effort will be rewarded beyond your fantasies. Shangri-la, Fantasy Island, the Lost World; it’s all really Kauai.

Kauai vacation rentals for the vacation of your dreams!

May 17th, 2008

So dazzling is Kauai’s scenery that Hollywood uses it as a standard backdrop for tropical paradise. You won’t find much in the way of high-rise hotels or nightlife on the least developed of Hawaii’s touristed islands, but you’ll be too enamored with its valleys and beaches to care. A low-key attitude, lovely Kauai vacation rentals, and perfect sand at Poipu and Kalapaki beaches make Kauai a favorite for honeymooners.

On our last trip to Kauai we stayed at Kauai vacation rentals in Poipu where we saw an endangered monk seal resting on the beach, hiked the shoreline from Mahaleapu to Poipu Beach Park, drove the rutted roads to Polihale’s fa isolated 17 mile strand, and journeyed to the Na Pali Coast . Yet, I’d been entranced by the mysterious North Shore and the glorious Princeville Resort with it’s enviable position on the bluffs overlooking famed Hanalei Bay. The North Coast has a reputation of being all wet, which is reasonable considering the area rests down-mountain from Mt. Waialeale , the wettest spot on earth. Here, some 500 inches of rainfall annually provide the excessive moisture that handily feeds Kauai’s famous waterfalls and waterways, which are also the only navigable rivers in the state. But the trade-off of this soggy gamble is the exquisite reward of decompressing alongside some the world’s most remarkable scenery and beaches. Although Kauai greeted us initially with moody, misty, eerie vistas, the days that followed offered extraordinarily high surf and brilliant sunshine. Rain or shine, we spent four days exploring every road, beach, attraction and waterfall from Na Pali to Wailua.

Another unforgettable adventure you can do from Maui condos is the Maui Downhill Bike Ride.
Bike down a volcano for an unforgettable island experience! It is the world’s longest downhill bicycle cruise down the slopes of Haleakala, the largest dormant volcano in the world. The tour starts just outside Haleakala National Park and is approximately 28 miles (45 kilometers).
Cycle at a leisurely pace, pedaling past open fields and pastures and a stunning Maui landscape spotted with colorful flowers and regal trees. Stop for great photo opportunities as your bike guide shows you the rich cultural and historical background of the area.  Your trip also includes a light continental breakfast before the ride begins. The whales migrate close to 3,500 miles from their Alaskan summer feeding waters, to the warm waters of Hawaii where they mate and have their calves.

A Lanikai villa for a taste of heaven

May 17th, 2008

“This is the most beautiful beach I have ever seen! It’s absolute paradise with warm sun, swaying palm trees, and calm, crystal clear water with a soft, sandy bottom. You could be standing in the water up to your waist and you can still see your toes. It’s never too crowded; there are no resorts on this beach.  To access the beach you park on a road full of beautiful Lanikai villa residences and there are public beach access paths every 500ft.  I revisited Lanikai Beach by walking down the public access lane opposite the intersection of Mokumanu Street and Mokulua Drive, having learned from a friend that a small portion of the beach had survived the erosion which had removed most of the sand from both the North and South portions of the beach.”

“Our Lanikai villa put us on the most underrated beach I have ever visited in my life!   Although it is narrow in some parts the view is amazing and the water is crystal clear.  The sand is incredibly fine, and the best part is that it’s never crowded!  If you visit Oahu, forget going to Waikiki beach where the sand is coarse, there’s trash here and there, it’s always crowded and noisy.   By contrast Lanikai is a perfect beach with the best views I have ever seen due to the Mokuluas in the background. Also, it is protected by a reef a few hundred feet out, so there is never huge surf. The water can be a bit choppy though.  We rented kayaks to paddle to the Mokulua island bird sanctuary.  There were lots of people fishing at this beach. Supposedly there are turtles in this area too. We just walked along the rocks on the shore and watched the surf come in and looked for the crabs living in the rocks.  I hope this is what heaven is like!”

Surf’s up at your Oahu beach house!

May 17th, 2008

In summer, when the water’s warm and there’s a soft breeze in the air, the south swell comes up. It’s surf season in Waikiki, the best place to learn how to surf on Oahu. For lessons, go early to Aloha Beach Service, next to the Sheraton Moana Surfrider, 2365 Kalakaua Ave., Waikiki (tel. 808/922-3111). The beach boys offer surfing lessons for $30 an hour; board rentals are $10 for the first hour and $5 for every hour after that. You must know how to swim.  At your Oahu beach house on the North Shore, you have no excuse not to learn to surf: Hans Hedemann, a champion surfer with 34 years of competition under his hang-ten toes, has opened the Hans Hedemann Surf School at the Turtle Bay Resort (tel. 808/924-7778; www.hhsurf.com). His classes range from one-on-one private sessions to group lessons (four students to one teacher) and begin at $50 a hour. The school offers lessons at six different hotels: New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel, Park Shore Waikiki, Outrigger Reef on the Beach, Sheraton Waikiki, Kahala Hotel & Resort; and Turtle Bay Resort.
Surfboards are available for rent on the North Shore at Surf-N-Sea, 62-595 Kamehameha Hwy., Haleiwa (tel. 808/637-9887; www.surfnsea.com), for $5 to $7 an hour. This company also offers lessons for $65 for 2 hours.

At your Oahu beach house on the windward side, call Kimo’s Surf Hut, 151 Hekili St., across from Daiei, in Kailua (tel. 808/262-1644). Kimo and his wife, Ruth, couldn’t be more friendly and helpful. In addition to surfboards ($30 a day) and body boards for rent, Kimo has his own personal collection of vintage surfboards, lovingly displayed on the walls of his shop. If you have the time, Kimo will gladly tell you the pedigree and history of each board. Although Kimo doesn’t offer formal surfing lessons, he’d be happy to give you pointers.  More experienced surfers should drop in on any surf shop around Oahu, or call the Surf News Network Surfline (tel. 808/596-SURF) to get the latest surf conditions. The Cliffs, at the base of Diamond Head, is a good spot for advanced surfers; 4- to 6-foot waves churn here, allowing high-performance surfing.  If you’re in Hawaii in winter and want to see the serious surfers catch the really big waves, bring your binoculars and grab a front-row seat on the beach near Kalalua Point. To get here from Waikiki, take the H-1 toward the North Shore, veering off at H-2, which becomes Kamehameha Highway (Hwy. 83). Keep going to the funky surf town of Haleiwa and Waimea Bay; the big waves will be on your left, just past Pupukea Beach Park.

Maui villa adventures upcountry

May 17th, 2008

There are many reasons to visit upcountry Maui from your Maui villa and to include the Ulupalakua Ranch and Tedeschi Winery in your travels. But I will admit to you immediately that the wine is not the primary reason for this recommendation.  Sure, the winery has won awards and even produces a Brut Champagne, but unless you like your wine made from pineapples instead of grapes, it might be best to stick with other vineyards and vintages. Nevertheless, the trip to the 150 year old ranch and its much more recent vineyards is sure to be a memorable experience.
Especially if you are interested in seeing bicoastal views of Maui from 2-3,000 ft elevations, to experience the cool clear air that spills from higher altitude cloud forests and to witness dozens of ecosystems in your short one hour drive from any of the island’s coastal areas. Here on the 23,000 acre ranch, seeing cows lowing in the pastures and horses tended by the cowboys (paniolos) you’ll be tempted to imagine this might be Wyoming. But then you encounter a incongruous patch of lava rock poking through the pasture lands and you know you aren’t in Kansas — or anywhere else you‘ve ever been — any more.

Besides the magnificent beauty of the trip to this bountiful upcountry locale at Ulupalakua Ranch you will have the opportunity to embrace a historical record of the island which is kept in the little museum room adjacent to the wine tasting cottage. You’ll learn that it was here that the last king of Hawaii came to be quieted during turbulent times. In fact, this Maui villa was built specifically to host the monarch and the grove of trees planted in the front yard are named the “hula grove” because they were carefully arranged to serve as a hula stage during his visits.

Oahu vacation homes for the tops in underwater fun!

May 17th, 2008

Oahu vacation homes bring you a word of underwater adventure!  Some of the best snorkeling in Oahu is at the underwater park at Hanauma Bay. It’s crowded — sometimes it seems there are more people than fish, but Hanauma has clear, warm, protected waters and an abundance of friendly reef fish — including Moorish idols, scores of butterflyfish, damselfish, and wrasses. Hanauma Bay has two reefs, an inner and an outer — the first for novices, the other for experts. The inner reef is calm and shallow (less than 10 ft.); in some places, you can just wade and put your face in the water. Go early: It’s packed by 10am and closed on Tuesdays.  Braver snorkelers may want to head to Shark’s Cove, on the North Shore just off Kamehameha Highway, between Haleiwa and Pupukea. Sounds risky, we know, but we’ve never seen or heard of any sharks in this cove, and in summer, this big, lava-edged pool is one of Oahu’s best snorkel spots. Waves splash over the natural lava grotto and cascade like waterfalls into the pool full of tropical fish. To the right of the cove are deep-sea caves to explore.  The uninitiated might prefer a lesson and a snorkel tour. Surf-N-Sea, 62-595 Kamehameha Hwy., Haleiwa (tel. 808/637-9887), has 2-hour tours, with equipment, starting at $45.

It happens every day on the North Shore Shark Adventure (tel. 808/228-5900; www.hawaiisharkadventures.com), the dream of Captain Joe Pavsek, who decided, after some 30 years of surfing and diving, to share the experience of seeing a shark with visitors staying at Oahu vacation homes.. To make sure that the predators of the deep will show up for the viewing, Captain Pavsek heaves “chum,” a not very appetizing concoction of fish trimmings and entrails, over the side of his 26-foot boat, Kailolo. Sort of like ringing the dinner bell, after a few minutes the sharks (generally gray reef, Galapagos, and sandbars, ranging from 5 ft.-15 ft.) show up — sometimes just a few, sometimes a couple dozen.  Depending on the sea conditions and the weather, snorkelers can stay in the cage as long as they wish, with the sharks just inches away. The shark cage, connected to the boat with wire line, floats several feet back and a little above the surface, holding two snorkelers comfortably and four snuggly. You can stay on the boat and view the sharks from a more respectable distance for just $60. The brave and adventuresome will be down in that cage, just thin aluminum separating them from jaws. It definitely will be a memory you won’t forget.

Maui villas for an off the beaten path adventure!

May 16th, 2008

Maui villas provide you with with natural wonders and off the beaten path curiosities.  You can combine a scenic, expertly narrated tour to the summit of spectacular 10,023 foot high Haleakala with a visit to the unique Iao Needle located in lush Iao Valley State Park. You can also visit the town of Wailuku, see flower farms and fields of pineapple and sugar cane. Be sure to bring your camera!  Wailuku town has the unique Bailey Museum. It was here that Edward Bailey and his family, teachers from Boston, lived and established a woman‘s Seminary. Recognizing the importance of education for native Hawaiians, governor of Maui, Hoapi’ili authorized the building of this seminary where young women were boarded and taught meaningful life skills. The small museum houses important artifacts and insights into the Hawaiian culture and has some of Maui’s most amazing examples of ancient crafts such as outrageously beautiful feather and shell leis and calabash bowls. One of the only intact wood carvings of the half man-half pig of Hawaiian mythology is on display here.

Strolling around town I happened upon the lovely old theater where a performance of “Hot L Baltimore” was currently being stage by the Maui Theater company. Across the street, a farmer’s market was in full swing. Pineapples the size of pumpkins ($2), brilliant tomatoes (3/$1), long beans, organic lettuces, perfect yellow/green papaya (2/$1) , were hawked by little Asian ladies who used hand signals to communicate. For a moment I became so absorbed in the scene that I forgot I was still in America!  It really is amazing what you encounter from Maui villas when you wander just a wee bit off the beaten path.
