Hawaii’s flowers have many uses and the orchid is one of the most popular

Plumeria (also frangipani, melia, temple tree) is a small tree that grows various flower colors, including white and shades of red, pink and yellow. Heliconia are another popular plant that is native to South America but found throughout Hawaii. The fiery red and fascinating nickname, lobster claw, make it a tropical favorite. A less dominant name is bird of paradise, a more apt name for this plant on a tropical island. Your vacation will begin and end with aloha

While Hawaii is part of the United States, many visitors from the mainland and other parts of the world find that knowing a few Hawaiian words, terms and customs can go a long way (especially for those travelers who want to avoid that label, Ugly American). A beautiful language, with words that are Polynesian, Marquesan and Tahitian, plus local Pidgin, it will be impressive to fit in and put the words to use while on vacation.

Mahalo
Friendly people, helpful individuals and warm welcomes will evoke the need to say thank you. Mahalo is a one word expression to show appreciation and say thanks.

Makai
Directions are an important part of any vacation, whether you’re familiar with the area, a returning guest and/or using a GPS. The islands are generally circular and it’s not always straightforward to use north and south for directions, so you’ll hear local residents say makai, referring to the ocean. You’ll also hear windward for the eastern and wet part of an island.

Mauka
Along with makai, mauka means mountain and refers to the opposite direction of makai. When you’re told that the direction to take is mauka, you’re driving or hiking toward the inner parts of an island, away from the ocean, toward the mountains. While learning these terms, you’ll also hear leeward for the western and dry part of an island.

Wikiwiki
Referring to the Honolulu airport shuttle, Wikiwiki is the ground transportation between terminals at the airport. It means speedy. The islands all have a leisurely pace and while you won’t necessarily want to hurry on vacation, you’ll hear the word and should know it.

Haole, Ma Li Hini and Kama’aina
While it’s mostly a term to designate a foreigner or someone who is not of Hawaiian descent, it can be used in an unflattering way, so if you hear it, you’ll know how it’s being used based on context. Ma Li Hini is a tourist and kama’aina is a local island resident, whether native or someone who now lives on the island.

Pupu
Pupu platters go hand-in-hand with happy hour. The pupu can range from little seafood bites to innovative Pan-Asian or Hawaiian tapas. You’ll find these at luaus to, along with poi, the taro plant and must-try flavor of the islands.

Da kine
Da kine is one of those words with a lot or little translation, depending on how much you need translated. It’s a genuine Pidgin term that can basically amount to saying ‘that thing’ or stuff. It’s flattering though, when you say it to mean the best, so use it for your favorite experiences on vacation.

Ohana
Ohana means family, not just your personal circle or close friends, but blood relatives. Less commonly used, hui refers to the people closest to you, whether family or friends.

An expression as much as a term, shaka exemplifies island spirit. Middle fingers remain in a fist and thumb and pinky are extended and wiggled, shaka is hang loose or an affirmation of a friendly gesture. Overuse by ma li hini can be viewed as a typical tourist trying to fit in, but go with it and have fun.

Aloha
Your vacation will begin and end with aloha, with several in between. Aloha and its multiple meanings of hello, goodbye and greetings is a warm welcome. You’ll often hear of the aloha spirit because it’s more than just a way to say hi; rather, it’s an extension of the welcome, with good wishes as you meet others and as you come and go while on vacation.

Hawaii Economy and Tourism Recovering Despite Concerns

In 2010 Hawaii saw an increase in visitor numbers of about 9%. That strong tourism growth was continuing in early 2011 and was on a pace to set an all-time tourism record for the state before the earthquake and tsunami in Japan caused a severe drop in visitors from Japan.

The natural disasters in Japan have as well as other factors, including continued increases in the price of oil, have led to slight downward revisions in economic forecasts for the state though gradual growth is expected to continue.

Overall visitor arrival growth for Hawaii in 2011 is expected to be about 2.7% in 2011, followed by a 3 percent growth in 2012, according to the quarterly report of the University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization (UHERO) released in May of 2011. The number of Japanese visitors to Hawaii is expected to decline about 11% for the year and then grow about 10% in 2012.

At the time of the report Japanese arrivals were running about 25% below levels from the previous year. Due to the scope of the catastrophe, the recovery in Japan is expected to take several years though it is slowly beginning. A flight from Narita to Honolulu that had been suspended by Japan Airlines after the disaster has already been restored.

Hawaii tourism is likely to show strong growth in the near future

Along with rebounding tourism, overall job growth in Hawaii is expected to begin again in 2011 after three declining years. Renewed job growth in Hawaii in 2011 and 2012 is expected to come in part from construction related to Oahu’s rail project.

Payroll jobs in Hawaii, according to UHERO, is predicted to be 1.6% in 2011 followed by a 2.2% growth in 2012. The negative effects of rising oil prices and the natural disasters in Japan, according to the report, are being countered by an overall gradual strengthening of Hawaii’s economy allowing continued economic growth.

Hawaii saw a shrinking economy and a slowing in the Hawaii real estate market, in both 2008 and 2009 before experiencing modest growth in 2010. The forecast for 2011 is a 2.6% growth in Hawaii’s economy, a number that was adjusted downward from 2.7% forecasted before the tsunami.

According to the State of Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT), Hawaii tourism is predicted to grow 3.8% in 2011 with visitor days increasing 5% and visitor expenditures also climbing 10.8%. The growth is expected to continue in 2012 with a 2.9% increase in visitors to Hawaii, 2.7% increase in visitor days and a 5.5% increase in visitor expenditures.

Overall job growth in Hawaii is expected to pick up this year

The DBEDT has forecast a positive growth for Hawaii’s economy for the remainder of 2011, also noting that Hawaii’s economic health depends significantly on key international economies such as Japan as well as the United States.

Economic growth (real GDP) in the U.S. is expected to rise by 2.7% in 2011 and 3.2% in 2012, according to the Blue Chip Economic Consensus Forecasts issued in May, 2011. These forecasts take into account the Japan earthquake and tsunami, which caused a slight downward revision in the numbers.

Economic growth for Japan was lowered to a forecasted .4% increase in 2011 (down from 1.5% previously forecasted) and 2.7% for 2012 (up from 1.8%). Hawaii’s economy is expected to show a 1.6% growth in 2011 (previously forecasted at 2%) and 2% growth in 2012.

Hit Show a Boost to Hawaii Tourism Drawing Viewers Around World

The new hit show Hawaii Five-O ended its first season in early May with a cliffhanger episode. CBS recently announced that the popular new television series was being picked up for another season that will begin airing in the fall of 2011.

The season finale of Hawaii Five-O was true to form with car chases, explosions and more of the excitement that people have come to expect from the action adventure series. Former Lost actor Daniel Dae Kim who plays detective Chin Ho Kelly called the finale “the strongest episode of the season.”

Actor Alex O’Loughlin, who plays the Steve McGarrett as the head of the crime-fighting Five-O team, reminisced about shooting the 23 episodes and a pilot and noted that the cast and crew had bonded during their time in the Islands which included many long workdays. O’Laughlin has said that he will spend the summer between his hometown Australia as well as Los Angeles and Hawaii.

Oahu’s public transportation has an extensive system of routes throughout the island

Kauai
The Kauai Bus is a fixed route service from Kekaha to Hanalei, with stops in Koloa, Kapaa/Kapahi, Lihue and Wailua. The service is operated through the County of Kauai and schedules are available online (http://www.kauai.gov/Government/Departments/TransportationAgency/tabid/58/Default.aspx). Fares are available per shuttle, main line or monthly. You can take strollers (folding), musical instruments and body boards but not surfboards. Check online to inquire about specific questions.

Maui
The County of Maui offers bus service between Central, South, West, Haiku and Upcountry Maui. You can ride the bus daily, including holidays, paying a daily or monthly fare. Big Island
Hawaii County offers free rides on the Big Island Hele-On Bus so the only fees are for luggage and carry-on items. The Hele-On Bus is very convenient with extensive routes throughout Big Island, including Hilo, Kona, Kohala, Waimea and Pohoa.
