Kauai Vacation Homes on the Leeward Side

April 16th, 2008

The leeward side of the island of Kauai offers a much calmer and dryer area than the North Shore.  One of the most popular areas on the south side of the island is Poipu.  The swimming conditions are often calmer and more conducive to safe swimming than the north shore.  The flatter and dryer area is less dramatic but is a favorite among many tourists.  The south shore extends along the coast from Kipu Kai and Maha’ulepu Beach to the Poipu Beaches and to the west towards Salt Pond Beach Park.  There are many several places to see along this spectacular stretch of coastline.

If you are staying in the area in one of the Kauai vacation homes available from HawaiianBeachRentals.com then you can do this at your leisure.  Off of Rt 520 or Maluhia Road, you will travel through the “Tunnel of Trees” to Koloa then to a fork where you can go to Poipu Beach or to Lawai, home of the National Tropical Botanical Gardens and the fascinating and popular blow hole called Sprouting Horn.  At Poipu Beach Park you’ll find a rock trimmed pool that is a favorite for those families with small children.  It is also a popular favorite for the older children and parents at the other end of this curving beach because there is great snorkeling to see some of the spectacular tropical fish in the area.  If you carry some fish food while snorkeling you’ll have the fish eating right out of your hand.  Make sure you stay in the protected reef so you don’t get caught in the strong current just outside of it.
