Heavenly Lanikai Beach
June 19th, 2007
A trip to Lanikai located in Kailua located on the windward side of Oahu, is well worth the trip, actually is a must if you are staying on the island of Oahu. Lanikai literally means ‘royal sea’ or ‘heavenly sea’. Once you see the exceptionally clear pristine water and the surrounding sparkling sand, you’ll understand the naming of the beach and why the beach is one of the most scenic beaches in Hawaii. There is a lot to do to enjoy the crystal clear water. The diving visibility is exceptional and the sea life is stunning. If you prefer to stay on top of the water kayaking to the nearby twin islands is very popular. Be sure to bring your camera as both islands are bird sanctuaries. The larger of the two is very popular.
Daily boaters, kayakers, surfers, paddlers and sailors visit the small beach for bird watching, sunning and surfing. Take heed that the crossing is not for novices. Mokumanu and Mokulua Islands are a little less than a mile from the south end of Lanikai Beach. The crossing is a long upwind and upcurrent swim. Since the islands are located seaward of Lanikai Reef, they are subject to high surf, especially during the winter months. Please be careful walking on the windward sides of both islands.
