Things To Do
Go for a horseback riding adventure in the rolling ranchlands of North Kohala, or see the countryside on an ATV excursion. Visit local historical sites including Puukohola Heiau over overlooking the Kawaihae Harbor. Enjoy relaxing days at the Kohala Coast's white-sand beaches, or go sport fishing or scuba diving from Kawaihae Harbor. Take a drive north to explore Waimea town, Hawi and Kapaau. Follow the scenic Hamakua Coast to Akaka Falls and gaze into the steep-walled Waipio Valley, and explore Hilo town and the summit craters of Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
The Kohala Coast has many excellent beaches for everything from snorkeling and scuba diving to surfing and stand up paddle boarding. One of Hawaii's prettiest beaches is Mauna Kea Beach on Kaunaoa Bay. The largest white-sand beach in this region is the lovely Hapuna Beach, and the scenic Anaehoomalu Bay is also the site of an ancient Hawaiian fishpond. Samuel Spencer Beach Park is usually great for snorkeling and swimming due to the protection of an outside coral reef, and it is also within walking distance of the historic Puukohola Heiau.
Kawaihae offers some nice dining options including Cafe Pesto where they take pride in creating exotic pizzas as well as Asian-inspired pasta dishes with the backdrop of Kawaihae Harbor. The Seafood Bar & Grill serves up hearty steak, pizza and the freshest of fish dishes including top quality sashimi, with indoor and outdoor seating as well as a 70-foot mango wood bar. For more restaurant choices visit the resort areas of the Kohala Coast and Waimea town to the north.
Visit the various resort areas of the Kohala Coast to explore boutique gift shops, and drive south along the Kona Coast to see more posh resort areas a well as historic Kailua village. To the north you will find shops to browse in Waimea town as well as the charming small towns of Hawi and Kapaau.
Renting a car is recommended when staying in Kawaihae vacation rentals so you have easy access to nearby beaches and activities as well as day trips to the Kona Coast, Hilo and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The island's bus service, called Hele On Bus, is free and stops at various points around the island including transportation between Kona and Hilo every day except Sunday.
Weather and Ocean Conditions
The Kohala and Kona coastlines on the Big Island's western shore, including the Kawaihae region, are the warmest and driest areas of the island while Hilo on the northeast shore receives more rainfall making this area lush and green. The Big Island is known for its sunny weather which remains relatively stable all year around. The Kona and Kohala Coast regions see average daily temperatures around 80 degrees F., perhaps a bit hotter in the summer and a bit cooler in the winter, with nighttime temperatures dropping about 15 degrees. Temperatures are cooler at higher elevations like Kona Coffee Country and atop Kilauea Volcano though these areas still can be quite warm during the days. Ocean conditions vary widely at Big Island beaches with many areas exposed to strong currents and potentially dangerous surf, particularly during the winter months. Numerous beaches provide good protection from the open ocean and provide safe areas for swimming and snorkeling. Visitors are urged to only visit lifeguarded beaches for water activities and heed all posted warnings. Check with lifeguards about the safest areas to participate in the activities you choose.

The Kawaihae area once served as the seat of the Hawaiian monarchy. From 1790 to 1794, Kawaihae was home to King Kamehameha I who constructed Puukohola Heiau which is now a designated national historic site. The harbor was used by European voyagers, merchant ships and whalers in the 1700s and 1800s as a place to resupply for their journeys and make repairs to their ships.
