Swimming and snorkeling are popular activities at Kahaluu Beach Park on the north end of Keauhou where an ancient stone wall creates an area protected from the open ocean. To the north on the Kohala Coast is Samuel Spencer Beach Park which also is nice for swimming due to a protective reef. South of Keauhou is Kealakekua Bay which is a great place to see dolphins, and during the winter months this coastline is a great place to spot humpback whales.

Take a drive up into Kona Coffee Country for interesting shops in the small towns amidst the coffee plantations.

Getting Around

A rental car is best for those staying in Keauhou condos so you can explore the great beaches and resorts of the Kona Coast as well as the Big Island's other sights and attractions including the Kohala Coast, Waimea town, Hilo and Volcanoes National Park. The Big Island's free public bus service called Hele On Bus travels between Hilo and Kona daily except Sunday, and stops at major towns around the island.

Weather and Ocean Conditions

The Big Island's Kona Coast including Keauhou is known for its idyllic sunny weather all year around while Hilo and the eastern side of the island see more rain. Receiving only about ten inches of rain annually, the Keauhou temperatures are typically in the mid-70s rising into the high 80s on the hottest of summer days. Ocean conditions can change with arriving swells though generally the water is relatively calm. History

Among the modern buildings of Keauhou town are many Hawaiian cultural sites that have been restored so they can be viewed by the public. On the grounds of the Keauhou Beach Resort Hotel is the King Kalakaua Beach House and other important historical structures. A Cultural Preserve Tour leaves from Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort and explores the Keauhou Bay shoreline. South of Keauhou Bay is an ancient burial ground and also a place where holua (sled) riding down stone ramps took place centuries ago. A bit farther south you can take a self-guided tour of the ancient place of refuge known as Puuhonua O Honaunau overlooking Honaunau Bay.
