Several exceptional beaches are found in the Lihue area including Kalapaki Beach right next to Nawiliwili Harbor. The relatively well-protected Kalapaki Bay is lined with white sand and manicured grass lawns, and there are also volleyball courts. This is a great place to take a surfing or stand up paddle boarding lesson, or even a ride in an outrigger canoe. Water sports equipment rentals are available from vendors along the shore. For more great beaches head over to the Poipu Resort area where will find the family-friendly Poipu Beach which is popular for snorkeling as well as bodyboarding and surfing, with lifeguards and picnic facilities. Lihue's Kukui Grove Shopping Center includes major retail and department stores as well as a variety of boutique gift shops, clothing and apparel, sporting goods and more. Lihue is Kauai's commercial center so there is no shortage of places to shop. Walmart and Costco are located here as well if you want to stock up on supplies for your Kauai adventures. Head south to Poipu resort for boutique gift shopping at the resort hotels and The Shops at Kukuiula. Drive north from Lihue for fun shopping in Kapaa town as well as Kilauea, Princeville and Hanalei.

Getting Around

A rental car is recommended when staying in a Lihue condo so you can explore the local beaches and attractions as well as day trips to Poipu Resort on the south shore, Waimea Canyon on the west side and many beautiful beaches on the north shore. Kauai's public bus system operates 7 days a week and provides service between most of the island's major communities.

Weather and Ocean Conditions

Lihue weather is generally very pleasant throughout the year with temperatures in the mid to high 70s, a bit warmer in the summer and a bit cooler during the winter months, with night time temperatures typically dropping about five to ten degrees. Trade winds provide a pleasant cooling effect. The west and south shores of Kauai are generally a bit warmer and drier than the north and east shores due to the predominantly northeast trending trade winds.

Ocean conditions vary through the seasons with the east shore typically quite calm in the summer months and great for snorkeling and other water activities. Winter months often bring high surf from north swells which can also create strong currents. South swells sometimes arrive during the summer months bringing bigger waves mainly along southern coastlines. Some beaches are more protected from the open ocean and conditions can change from day to day. For swimming and water sports it is best to visit lifeguarded beaches and check with water safety personnel about the safest places for the activities you choose.

History

Lihue has a rich history that today can be seen in preserved stone structures dating to ancient times and also the preserved buildings from the eras of missionaries and the sugarcane industry. Along the shore in Lihue is Alekoko, also known as the Menehune Fishpond. This ancient fishpond is a marvel of stonework and aquaculture engineering, and is said to have been built all in one night by the legendary small race of people called Menehune. The historic fishpond is part of Huleia National Wildlife Refuge. For interesting exhibits about Kauai's history and culture visit the Kauai Museum in downtown Lihue.
