Things To Do Launiupoko Beach Park is a favorite location of local surfers and has a nice lawn for relaxing. An offshore reef creates a relatively well-protected area that is nice for small children. The beach here isn't very wide but it's great for beach walks enjoying views of the West Maui Mountains as well as views of the islands of Lanai and Molokai across the ocean channel. Keep an eye out for humpback whales passing by offshore during the winter months. Launiupoko Beach has restrooms and picnic facilities, and is located along Route 30 at mile marker 18.
Head south from Launiupoko to Maalaea where you can see interesting marine life at the Maui Ocean Center including a huge walk-through aquarium and interactive exhibits for children. From Maalaea Harbor you can also embark on snorkeling and diving excursions, fishing charters or just a leisurely sunset sail. Whale watching is popular during the winter months when the humpbacks arrive from far to the north to mate and give birth in Hawaiian waters.
