Napili is a scenic coastal region with some of the prettiest shoreline views in West Maui. Beautiful beaches, a variety of shopping and dining opportunities, and many options for land and sea activities make Napili an ideal vacation destination. Nearby are the posh resort areas of Kaanapali and Kapalua with more pristine beaches, golf courses, upscale boutique shops and restaurants ranging from casual fare to elegant, fine dining with great ocean views.
Things To Do
Spending time at Napili Bay Beach and other area beaches provides fun in the sun with lots of water activity options from snorkeling and scuba diving to sunset sails. Enjoy a leisurely walk along the shoreline to Kapalua Resort on the Napili-Kapalua loop route which takes in views of tall Norfolk pines and well-manicured golf greens. There are also some nice hiking trails in the valleys and along the ridge tops between Napili and Kapalua. Horseback riding is another fun way to see the area and tours go through former pineapple fields and into tropical rainforest valleys with sweeping vistas over the West Maui landscape. This region also has exceptional golf courses including the challenging Royal Kaanapali Golf Course with memorable oceanfront holes.
Nearby Beaches
The crescent-shaped Napili Bay Beach is a nice swimming beach as it is relatively well-protected from the open ocean, typically with very calm water that is nice for children. Snorkeling and scuba diving is also good here with coral reef that is home to a profusion of marine life including Hawaiian green sea turtles. The best snorkeling is found on either end of the beach. Skim boarders and bodyboarders frequent this beach, particularly in the winter months during times of bigger surf. There is no lifeguard so use caution if swimming, and keep a close eye on children due to the steeply sloping shoreline which drops away quickly.
Restaurants
Restaurants at Na Pili Plaza include a variety of choices from Mexican at Maui Tacos to Thai food at the Bean Thai Restaurant which also offers plate lunches to go. Try the locally-owned Mama's Ribs & Rotisserie known for their tasty pork ribs and salads. Napili Market sells fresh produce, meat and seafood as well as prepared foods. For a wider selection of restaurants from casual fare to fine dining head over to Kapalua Resort or the shoreline promenade at Kaanapali Resort for delightful oceanfront dining.
Shopping
Napili Plaza has a nice selection of shops selling everything from gifts to groceries and some impressive works by local artisans. To prepare for your ocean activities visit Boss Frog's Dive & Surf Shop which rents snorkeling gear as well as boards for surfing and stand up paddling. Visit the resort areas of Kapalua and Kaanapali for many more shopping opportunities. Browse the boutiques along the shore at Kaanapali where you will find stylish, upscale shopping. A wide assortment of shops can also be found to the south in Lahaina.
Getting Around
Renting a car is recommended when visiting Napili so you can visit the nearby beaches and attractions including the nearby Kaanapali and Kapalua resort areas, Old Lahaina Town and day trips to the Hana town and Haleakala National Park.
Weather and Ocean Conditions
The Leeward location of Napili provides good protection from waves for much of the year providing nice conditions for swimming and snorkeling. Maui's western shore is known for its year-round great weather with lots of sunshine, moderate rain and comfortable temperatures that are usually in the 70s and 80s. Winter temperatures may dip into the 60s and summer temperatures may rise into the 90s on the hottest of days though the tropical trade winds provide a comfortable cooling effect. Napili Bay Beach is typically very calm with glassy conditions in the morning hours, though during the midday and afternoons there may be strong trade winds. The winter months can bring occasional large surf that makes swimming and surfing inadvisable. Like all Hawaii beaches, conditions can change and you should always use caution before entering the ocean. Inexperienced swimmers are advised to always swim and enjoy ocean activities at lifeguarded beaches. Check with lifeguards before going in the water to learn about the safest areas to swim and enjoy the water activities you choose.

History
West
Maui has a rich history beginning with the Hawaiian settlements of ancient
times through eras of missionaries, whaling, sugarcane plantations and tourism
development. Lahaina to the south of Napili was a major port for visiting
whalers in the 1800s and Old Lahaina Town still reflects that history. You can
learn more about West Maui history on the self-guided Lahaina Historic Trail
which is marked with informative bronze plaques detailing important events and
places. Major
resort development in this area began in 1962 when investors who had profited
in Maui's
sugarcane industry decided to build a master planned vacation resort and opened
the Kaanapali Beach Resort and Royal Kaanapali Golf Course. Today this Maui
region of idyllic weather and spectacular beaches has blossomed into a
world-class vacation destination.
