A day trip to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park provides an unforgettable adventure including massive summit craters, and you can even walk through a subterranean lava tube! The Puako coastal region is a great place to see humpback whales passing by offshore during the winter months. Nearby Beaches Explore tidepools and go snorkeling along the Puako Bay coastline with its fringing coral reefs and black sand and coral beaches. Follow the trail to Hawaii's largest fields of petroglyphs (ancient carvings in rocks) at the Puako Petroglyph Archaeological Preserve. Just north of Puako is Hapuna Beach which is one of the Big Island's nicest white-sand beaches.
