Wailea Bay Beach is one of the the Big Island's island's few white-sand beaches and is great for swimming during the summer months when the ocean waters are typically calm. This beach is also known as Beach 69 due to the number that used to be posted on the telephone pole at the turnoff to the beach. Waialea Bay offers some excellent snorkeling and the beach is great for picnics. Local families with children often spend the day here and there are plenty of shaded areas for relaxing.

The ocean waters at Waialea Bay Beach drop off relatively slowly making it hospitable for beginning snorkelers. Just beneath the surface are areas with large underwater rock formations and plenty of vibrant coral that is home to a myriad of colorful fish. Some of the interesting marine life seen in Waialea Bay include puffer and porcupine fish, butterflyfish and Moorish idols as well as green sea turtles.

Use caution during the winter months when the water can be rough. There are no lifeguards on duty proceed with caution. Experienced bodyboarders and surfers enjoy the north point of the bay.

Waialea Beach is typically less crowded that the popular Hapuna Beach about one mile up the shoreline, and is also more protected from the open ocean. During calm summer conditions those who have good swimming strength and skills can snorkel their way all the way from Hapuna Beach to Waialea Bay. Snorkeling in Waialea Bay is generally best on the northern end though there it can also be good at the other end of the bay and in the center.

Visit the resort areas near Waialea Bay for championship golf courses and a variety of other land as well as ocean activities. Just south of Waialea Bay is the posh Mauna Lani Resort as well as the King's Course golf course at the Waikoloa Beach Resort. The meticulously groomed and challenging King's Course is known for its undulating fairways meandering around ancient lava flows.
