About Waikoloa Vacation Rentals
Set more than 400 feet above sea level, Waikoloa offers excellent ocean and mountain vistas including a nice view of Maui across the ocean channel. Our Waikoloa vacation rentals offer the best of the Big Island's Kohala Coast along the island's scenic western shore.

Things To Do
Waikoloa is close to immaculate beaches as well as championship golf including the King's, Waikoloa Village and Waikoloa Beach golf courses. This is the drier side of the island and the sunny weather makes for fun ocean adventures including snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking and swimming. Other popular activities include horseback riding and ATV tours as well as hiking and biking. Take a day trip south to historic Kailua village or north to Waimea town and along the Hamakua Coast to see Akaka Falls and the Waipio Valley Lookout. Get a spa treatment, enjoy boutique shopping or just relax on the beach and enjoy the sunny Big Island days.

Nearby Beaches
Visit Anaehoomalu Bay for some fun snorkeling and kayaking adventures in waters that are protected by an offshore reef. Hapuna Beach is the island's largest white sand beach and lovely place to enjoy the ocean. Tidepool exploring and snorkeling are fun at Holoholokai Beach which is within walking distance of the Puako Petroglyph Archaeological Preserve where you can view the ancient carvings in the rocks. Kaunaoa Beach, also called Mauna Kea Beach, is an idyllic crescent of sand that has landed it on many "best beach" lists.

Restaurants
Waikoloa Village is home to many places to eat as well as live entertainment options in the evenings. The Hilton Waikoloa Village offers a sumptuous luau buffet along with a dinner show called Legends of the Pacific featuring Polynesian dances and music. At this traditional luau you will get to see how the kalua pig is roasted in the imu and sample a wonderful variety of island foods. King's Shops in Waikoloa is home to Merriman's Market Cafe and Roy's Waikoloa Bar & Grill as well as other exceptional restaurants. Explore the other Kohala Coast resort areas for more dining options, and you can also find many nice places to eat in Waimea town.

Shopping
Fun shopping can be found browsing the resort gift shops along the Kohala Coast and also in nearby Waimea town. King's Shops in Waikoloa has a variety of upscale shops including jewelry, art, apparel and specialty gifts. Visit the charming small towns of Hawi and Kapaau at the northern tip of the island for more interesting shopping including art galleries.

Getting Around

A rental car is recommended when staying in Waikoloa vacation rentals so you can explore the great beaches, resort areas and historical attractions of the Kohala Coast as well as day trips to the Kona Coast, historic Kailua village and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The Kona International Airport is about 24 miles south of Waikoloa. The island's bus service, called Hele On Bus, is free and stops at various points around the island including transportation between Kona and Hilo every day except Sunday.

Weather and Ocean Conditions
The Waikoloa region on the Kohala Coast is known for its sunny weather which remains relatively stable all year around. Both the Kohala and Kona coastlines on the Big Island's western shore are the warmest and driest areas of the island while Hilo on the northeast shore receives more rainfall. Expect average daily temperatures around 80 degrees F., perhaps a bit hotter in the summer and a bit cooler in the winter, with nighttime temperatures dropping about 15 degrees.
Ocean conditions vary widely at Big Island beaches with many areas exposed to strong currents and potentially dangerous surf, particularly during the winter months. Numerous beaches provide good protection from the open ocean and provide safe areas for swimming and snorkeling. Visitors are urged to only visit lifeguarded beaches for water activities and heed all posted warnings. Check with lifeguards about the safest areas to participate in the activities you choose.
