Kapaa town is located on Kauai's eastern shore along the "Coconut Coast,"the ideal setting to enjoy the island's majestic beauty from the beaches to the mountains. With close access to great dining and shopping, and central access to both the north and south shores, staying in a Kapaa condo provides everything you need for a relaxing and luxurious Kauai vacation.
Things To Do
An abundance of fun activities are available in this region from ziplining, horseback riding and ATV tours to a variety of ocean adventures. A popular east side family hike is the Sleeping Giant Trail (officially known as Nounou Trail), which rewards you with spectacular views of the east shore and Wailua River as well as inland views all the way to Mt. Waialeale. Rent bicycles in Kapaa town and explore the county bike/walking path called Ke Ala Hele Makalae (The Path that Goes by the Coast) which follows this whole stretch of shoreline. Whether you walk or ride, it's a great way to enjoy ocean views and also meet friendly people as this is a daily exercise route for many local residents. Enjoy beaches along the Coconut Coast or head north to Hanalei or south to Poipu Beach. During the winter months you can go on a whale watching tour to get up close and personal with the humpback whales that come to Hawaii to mate and give birth.
Nearby Beaches
Among the numerous beaches in this area the most popular is Kealia Beach located on the north end of Kapaa town. This is a lifeguarded beach that is a favorite among the east side bodyboarders and surfers, and the wide and sandy beach is nice for long beach walks. Ocean conditions can often be a bit tricky at Kealia so if you are learning to surf you may want to choose a beach with gentler waves, and taking a surfing lesson is recommended. The north end of Kealia Beach is the most protected from the open sea. Lydgate Beach Park in Wailua has a nice area for small children and an elaborate playground area, and Poipu Beach on the south shore is also a popular family beach good for a variety of water activities, rentals and lessons. For more great beaches head up to the north shore where Hanalei Bay is a mecca for water sports including kayaking and stand up paddle boarding.
Restaurants
A two-mile stretch along the main road in Kapaa town takes you by dozens of places to eat from fast food to fine dining. In recent years Kapaa's central commercial area with many preserved plantation-era buildings has developed a hipper vibe with live music and a variety of great places to catch a snack or shave ice in the day or dine out at night. More great dining can be found to the north in Kilauea town, Princeville Resort and Hanalei town, or head south to Lihue for an abundance of eateries, and Poipu Resort area for some exceptional seaside dining.
Shopping
Many of the preserved structures in historic Old Kapaa town now house interesting shops. The main commercial stretch of Kapaa town includes several shopping complexes and a variety of art galleries, boutique shops, supermarkets and pretty much everything you will need to enjoy your Kauai vacation. Head south to Lihue, Kauai's main commercial center, for many shopping choice including the Kukui Grove Shopping Center, and a bit farther to Poipu Resort for upscale boutique shopping at the resort hotels and the Shops at Kukuiula. On the north shore Kilauea town, Princeville and Hanalei town have lots of interesting gift shops and art galleries to explore.
Getting Around
A rental car is recommended when staying in a Kapaa condo so you have easy access to local beaches and attractions on the "Coconut Coast"as well as day trips to the beaches and towns of the north shore, Poipu Resort on the south shore and Waimea Canyon on the west side. Kauai's public bus system operates 7 days a week and provides service between most of the island's major communities.
Weather and Ocean Conditions
Kapaa weather is very pleasant throughout the year with temperatures typically in the mid to high 70s F. becoming a bit warmer in the summer and a bit cooler during the winter months, with night time temperatures dropping five to ten degrees. Trade winds provide a pleasant cooling effect. Kauai's north and east shores see more rain and slightly cooler temperatures than the south and west shores due to the predominantly northeast trending trade winds.
Ocean conditions vary through the seasons with the east shore typically very calm during the summer months and nice for snorkeling and other ocean activities. Winter months often bring north swells to the Hawaiian Islands which can create high surf and strong currents. South swells sometimes arrive during the summer months bringing bigger waves mainly along southern coastlines. Some beaches are more protected from the open sea, and ocean conditions can change from day to day. For swimming and water sports it is best to visit lifeguarded beaches and check with water safety personnel about the safest places for the activities you choose.
