Things To Do
Wailuku is considered the gateway to the scenic and historic Iao Valley and its iconic Iao Needle which rises up steeply 1,200 feet from the valley floor. This valley was the site of one of the major battles of King Kamehameha I as he rose to power in the 1700s. The Hawaii Nature Center in Iao Valley offers hands-on exhibits to learn about the area's unique native plants and animals.
To learn about this region's missionary past stop in at the Bailey House Museum housed in an old missionary home. Visit Kepaniwai Heritage Gardens to see exhibits about the many immigrant cultures that have a rich history in the Wailuku region, including traditional dwellings of the many workers who came to Hawaii from Portugal, New England, China and the Philippines to work on the sugarcane plantations. An important ancient Hawaiian cultural site in Wailuku can be seen at the Halekii-Pihana State Monument. For a memorable day trip drive up through Maui's scenic Upcountry region to visit flower farms and charming small towns and then continue up to the top of Haleakala Volcano to view the summit and enjoy hikes through forested areas that are home to rare native Hawaiian birds.
Nearby Beaches
Wailuku is close to great beaches with many opportunities for water activities as well as serenity and relaxation. Visit the beach at Maalaea Harbor or nearby Kanaha Beach or Waihee Beach. Kanaha Park is nice for kids and has picnic tables, restrooms and showers as well as barbecue grills. Drive over to Kapalua Bay and Kaanapali to enjoy some of Maui's nicest beaches with great snorkeling around the Black Rock area of Kaanapali. More great beaches, water sports and boat excursions can be enjoyed in Kihei and Kahului including whale watching tours during the winter months. Take a snorkeling excursion to Molokini Crater about three miles offshore where you can snorkel in a half-submerged volcanic crater that is home to a fascinating array of colorful fish and other marine life.
Restaurants
Wailuku offers interesting restaurants and bakeries including many family owned and operated establishments in and among the historic buildings with their charming wooden storefronts. For some hearty fuel for your Maui adventures try the Main Street Bistro in Wailuku which offers "refined comfort food" focusing on Maui-grown ingredients. The blackened chicken, shrimp pasta, and the slow-cooked baby back ribs with mustard glaze are all delicious! Also notable is the Ranch beef burger on a Maui onion bun with a salad made from fresh Kula lettuce. Stop in at Wailuku Coffee Company for fresh scones and fresh-brewed coffee that was grown on the island.
On the way to Iao Valley is the Waikapu Grill at the Maui Tropical Plantation (look for the windmill). This is a nice place to stop for lunch with exceptional sandwiches and burgers such as char-broiled Maui Cattle burger. Vegetarians will enjoy the Gardener with an assortment of fresh local veggies served with herb aioli on a ciabatta roll. You can also tour the 60-acre plantation and take the tram ride to learn about the region's agricultural history.
Shopping
Visit the shops of Old Wailuku Town along Market Street to enjoy the historic character of this area with art deco facades and false front buildings. From antiques to modern eclectic shops you will find some fun shops to browse. The Queen Kaahumanu Center in nearby Kahului has a Macy's, Sears and more than 100 other merchants offering everything from art and jewelry to Hawaiian collectibles, beachwear and fine apparel. The towns of Kihei and Kahului and have bustling commercial districts, and there are also fun shops to browse in Old Lahaina Town including numerous art galleries.
Getting Around
Renting a car is recommended when staying in a Wailuku condo so you can explore local attractions as well as day trips to West Maui beaches from Kaanapali to Wailea, and adventures from Haleakala National Park to "Heavenly Hana" town. Kahului Airport is about 10 minutes east of Wailuku. Maui's public bus system operates daily with service between numerous communities in West, South and Central Maui including Haiku, Kula and the Maui Upcountry.
Weather and Ocean Conditions
Wailuku enjoys comfortable weather throughout the year including abundant sunshine and warm, pleasant days with temperatures typically in the mid to upper 70s F. and low 80s. Temperatures often drop about five to ten degrees at night. Weather conditions vary considerably in the different regions of Maui with the eastern and northern shores being more exposed to the northeast trending trade winds bringing the rain showers that create Maui's lush and tropical landscapes, while the southern and western shores are a bit warmer and drier, with sunny days virtually all year around. Temperatures can be significantly cooler at higher elevations like the Maui Upcountry and atop Haleakala Volcano.
Ocean conditions also vary considerably on different sides of the island. Occasional summer swells can bring high surf to southern facing shores while during the winter months northern swells intermittently bring high surf to northern facing shores. The western shores of Maui often have very calm conditions that are great for swimming and water activities, as do the other shores though conditions change from day to day. Some beaches providing more protection from the open ocean than others. For swimming and other ocean activities visit Maui's life-guarded beaches and ask water safety personnel about the safest areas to enjoy the water activities you choose.
