I also was thinking about how each of these islands has an Island Nickname that helps to describe how each island is different from the rest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hawaiian archipelago (island group) includes eight main islands, and six of these are well-populated visitor destinations. These islands include Oahu, Kauai, Lanai, Molokai, Maui, and Hawaii Island (the Big Island).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"id_1\"><b>Oahu &#8211; The Gathering Place<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4312\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiianbeachrentals.com\/hawaiitravelblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/Oahu-The-Gathering-Place.png\" alt=\"Oahu - The Gathering Place\" width=\"512\" height=\"304\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The island of Oahu is the third largest island and is known as \u201cThe Gathering Place.\u201d Oahu measures about 44 miles by 30 miles with more than 100 miles of coast and as many beautiful beaches. Great surfing sites are found all around Oahu. Of course there is the north shore\u2019s renowned Banzai Pipeline where the world\u2019s best surfers ride huge waves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two parallel mountain ranges are Oahu\u2019s main geographical features, and these include the older Waianae Mountains and also the deeply-furrowed Koolau Mountains. These ranges were formed by volcanic eruptions that occurred more than one million years ago. The two mountain ranges are also aligned perpendicular to the northeast trade winds, and this creates a wet windward side on east Oahu and a drier leeward side to the west. The majestic Koolau Mountains run north to south for the length of the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"id_2\"><b>Kauai &#8211; The Garden Island<\/b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4311\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiianbeachrentals.com\/hawaiitravelblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/Kauai-The-Garden-Island.png\" alt=\"Kauai - The Garden Island\" width=\"512\" height=\"307\" \/><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kauai is known as \u201cThe Garden Island&#8221;, and is the fourth largest Hawaiian Island. Kauai is also the oldest of the eight main Hawaiian Islands \u2013 it formed about five million years ago. The age of Kauai accounts for its many stunning features including the awesome gorge of Waimea Canyon and the monumental sea cliffs of the Napali Coast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kauai is known for its beautiful green mountains and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiianbeachrentals.com\/hawaiitravelblog\/maui-vacation-information\/sunny-southern-maui-features-white-sand-beaches-and-upscale-resorts.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fine white-sand beaches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kauai\u2019s Mt. Waialeale is one of the planet\u2019s rainiest spots, receiving about 451 inches on average each year, which is the highest annual average in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"id_3\"><b>Molokai &#8211; The Friendly Isle<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4310\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiianbeachrentals.com\/hawaiitravelblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/Molokai-The-Friendly-Isle.png\" alt=\"Molokai - The Friendly Isle\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Molokai is known as \u201cThe Friendly Isle\u201d and is the fifth largest Hawaiian Island. The island has no fast food chains or high-rise buildings, and also no major shopping centers. Molokai\u2019s main town is Kaunakakai and is located on the island\u2019s southern coast. Molokai has the highest percentage of native Hawaiians of any Hawaiian Islands except Niihau.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiianbeachrentals.com\/hawaiitravelblog\/molokai-vacation-info\/top-12-molokai-attractions.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sea cliffs along Molokai\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> northern shore are spectacular, and they are said to be the highest sea cliffs on Earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"id_4\"><b>Lanai &#8211; The Private Isle<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4309\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiianbeachrentals.com\/hawaiitravelblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/Lanai-The-Private-Isle.png\" alt=\"Lanai - The Private Isle\" width=\"512\" height=\"342\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lanai is known as \u201cThe Private Isle\u201d and is the sixth largest Hawaiian Island. Lanai is also the smallest of the inhabited Hawaiian Islands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are very few paved roads on Lanai, and so a four-wheel drive vehicle comes in handy. From atop Lanaihale (\u201cHouse [of] Lanai\u201d) on a clear day you can see several other Hawaiian Islands.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"id_5\"><b>Maui &#8211; \u201cThe Valley Isle\u201d<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4308\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiianbeachrentals.com\/hawaiitravelblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/Maui-The-Valley-Isle.png\" alt=\"Maui - The Valley Isle\" width=\"512\" height=\"342\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maui is known as \u201cThe Valley Isle\u201d, and is the second largest Hawaiian Island. Maui is known for its beautiful beaches and also for having many fun things to do and see.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maui is also one of the best Hawaiian Islands for seeing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiianbeachrentals.com\/hawaiitravelblog\/hawaii-vacation-information\/whales-are-back-maui-whale-watching-tips.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">humpback whales<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because they love the relatively shallow waters around the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The gentle hills of the East Maui Mountains rise high up to the 10,000-foot summit of Haleakala Volcano, which is also an important cultural site as it was used for ancient Hawaiian astronomy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Western Maui is known for the championship golf courses and luxurious hotels at the beachfront resorts of Kaanapali and Kapalua. Many areas of Maui remain remote and undeveloped.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"id_6\"><b>Hawaii Island &#8211; The Big Island<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4307\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiianbeachrentals.com\/hawaiitravelblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/Hawaii-Island-The-Big-Island.png\" alt=\"Hawaii Island - The Big Island\" width=\"512\" height=\"341\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hawaii Island, also known as \u201cThe Big Island\u201d is known as \u201cThe Orchid Isle\u201d and is the largest of the Hawaiian Islands. The Big Island is also the youngest island at less than 500,000 years old, and is twice as big as the rest of the Hawaiian Islands combined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hawaii Island continues to grow in size due to the active lava eruptions coming from K\u012blauea Volcano, which is the most continuously active volcano on Earth. Kilauea has erupted almost non-stop since 1983 and lava from the volcano has flowed over more than 38 square miles, and also flows into the sea, adding to the island\u2019s size and also making new material for black sand beaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"id_7\"><b>Final Thoughts &#8211; The Hawaiian Islands<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, I think it is quite amazing that these tiny little islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean are so filled with wonderful places to visit, and amazing features from beautiful white-sand beaches to erupting volcanoes.
