Hawaii may be part of the U.S., but it is truly a world apart in so many ways. Hawaii condo rentals are your gateway to some of nature’s greatest wonders.  The Big Island is only a baby in geological terms (only 400,000 years old and growing), and changes daily as it grows even larger as the result of the tenaciously spewing Kiluaea. Gigantic fingers of lava streamed from Mauna Loa a number of times in recent history, annihilating everything in their path more than once. It’s not over. Further eruptions continue to threaten.

According to local legend, the volcano goddess Pele was angered when King Kamehameha ignored her, being more intent on his fishponds. Her wrath destroyed those favored ponds and they are just now starting to blossom again with life.   Meanwhile, man has sped up the process in certain places, turning barren black ash into vibrant tropical oases. Hawaii condo rentals sit on land the early Hawaiians have avoided at all costs - barren lava fields.  Kamehameha attempted to ward off the inevitable demise of his kingdom, but he certainly couldn’t ward off disease or volcanic destruction. Mauna Kea is the largest mountain in the world. How can that be when Mount Everest is the tallest in the world? Mount Everest has a height of 29,029 feet while Mauna Kea has a height of 13, 796 feet. However, when Mauna Kea is measured from its base to its summit, it is 33000 feet, 20000 feet which is below the Pacific Ocean. Mauna Kea is flanked by its neighbor, Mauna Loa, which has a height of 13, 679 feet, a little over 100 feet smaller.  Mauna Kea has been considered one of the most important astronomical sites in the world. There is an observatory at the top of the mountain and scientists from around the world come to Mauna Kea to do research because in a given year there are over 300 clear nights which contributes to the many clear pictures of the night sky.

I decided to make my journey from my Hawaii condo to the top of Mauna Kea at night to go stargazing. I turned onto Highway 200, also known as Saddle Road, which cuts between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. The road is not flat nor is it fast. The fastest I could travel on the road was 30 mph and that is because of the many dips and curves that wind its way to the entrance of Mauna Kea.  Once I finally made it to the entrance to Mauna Kea, the road did not get any better. Since I was going up a mountain, the road began to constantly curve until I made it to the top. It was interesting to see cattle grates on the road as there used to be a problem with cattle on the mountain.  I finally made it to the observatory which is operated by the University of Hawaii. I actually came on a good night, because there were over twenty high powered telescopes that I could look through and see the many different constellations and stars in the night sky. Volunteers from the university were on hand to answer any questions that we had about what we were seeing. One of the most interesting views was a close-up of the moon. You could actually put your camera lens onto the telescope view finder and take pictures of the moon. However, I didn’t need the telescope, because the sky was so clear, that it seemed that I could literally reach out and touch the moon.  If you are looking to do something at night from your Hawaii condo, stargazing on the highest point in Hawaii is a great start.

Parasailing — Get a bird’s-eye view of Hawaii’s pristine waters with UFO Parasail (tel. 800/FLY-4UFO or 808/325-5836; www.ufoparasail.net). UFO offers parasail rides daily from 8am to 2pm from Kailua Pier. The cost is $56 for the standard flight of 7 minutes of air time at 400 feet, and $65 for a deluxe 10-minute ride at 800 feet. You can go up alone or with a friend; no experience is necessary. Tip: Take the early-bird special (when the light is fantastic and the price is right) at 8am for just $51 (for 400 ft.) and $61 (for 800 ft.).

Snuba — If you’re not quite ready to make the commitment to scuba but you want more time underwater than snorkeling allows, Big Island Snuba Tours (tel. 808/326-7446; www.snubabigisland.com) may be the answer. Just like in scuba, the diver wears a regulator and mask; however, the tank floats on the surface on a raft and is connected to the diver’s regulator by a hose that allows the diver to go 20 to 25 feet down. You need only 15 minutes of instruction before you’re ready to go. Snuba can actually be easier than snorkeling, as the water is calmer beneath the surface.
