Hikers will appreciate the scenic coastal walk beginning at Shipwreck Beach along the Mahaulepu Heritage Trail from Keoneloa Bay to Kawailoa Bay past a wealth of geological and cultural sites.
Spend a day at the beach swimming, bodyboarding or snorkeling and then see the area from offshore on a sunset sail. Poipu Beach is a great place to take a surfing or stand up paddle boarding lesson or go for a ocean kayak excursion. Nearby is the famed Spouting Horn Blowhole where the waves hit the underwater lava shelf sending a geyser into the air. During the winter months you can get up close and personal with humpback whales on a whale watching tour. Plant lovers will enjoy a trip to Allerton and McBryde Gardens, two world class botanical gardens.
Several outstanding beaches line the southern shore including Shipwreck Beach known for being featured in the memorable cliff jumping scene in the movie "6 Days, 7 Nights"starring Anne Heche and Harrison Ford. Shipwreck is a favorite beach for more experienced bodyboarders and surfers while the nearby Poipu Beach Park is an ideal family beach with nice areas for snorkeling that are fairly well-protected from the open ocean. There is also a lifeguard station at Poipu Beach and picnic facilities, showers and restrooms. For more exceptional beaches take a day trip up to the north shore's Hanalei Bay for water sports and Makua (Tunnels) Beach for exceptional snorkeling. You can also drive west to Salt Pond Beach Park and expansive sands of Polihale Beach.
The Poipu area has a wide variety of dining choices from family restaurants to fine dining with lovely seaside views. Kauai's public bus system runs every day and visit most of Kauai's major towns.
Weather and Ocean Conditions
Poipu is known for its beautiful sunny weather and idyllic beaches. Kauai's south shore receives less rain than the north shore and sees moderate temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to the low 80s F. throughout the year, a bit cooler during the winter and a bit warmer during the summer with trade winds providing a pleasant, cooling effect.
Ocean conditions vary each day and through the seasons, though typically the south shore has very calm water throughout much of the year with intermittent ocean swells that may cause high surf. Some beaches provide more protection than others. For water sports it is best to visit lifeguarded beaches and ask water safety personnel about the safest areas for the ocean activities you choose. Lessons and guided tours are also recommended so you can benefit from local knowledge.
