Kauai’s Scenic Coconut Coast

Traveling to Kauai with the extended family? Little ones, teenagers, maybe Grandma and Grandpa too?

Consider booking your accommodations on the East side of the island known as the Coconut Coast which encompasses Wailua, Waipouli and Kapaa Town on Kauai.

Coconut Coast Offers Central Location for Exploring Kauai

This side of the island offers activities for all ages in your family or group, as well as being centrally located, so that time spent driving to explore other sides of the island is easier for all.

On the Coconut Coast you will find more oceanfront condominium units than on any other area of Kauai. For many extended families on vacation, easy access to the beach, having use of a swimming pool, and being within close proximity to larger grocery stores, farmers markets, restaurants and shops are a must have! It’s even better if all are within walking distance.

Lydgate Beach Park has Elaborate Playground and Safe Swimming

When you choose to vacation on the east side of Kauai, you can have it all, not to mention activities galore! Lydgate Beach Park in Wailua is the largest beach park on the island. The beach is over 3 miles long and includes two parks, and community built playgrounds for children to enjoy, called Kamalani Playground.

Lydgate Park is adjacent to a children and family friendly beach, consisting partly of an ancient Hawaiian fishpond constructed by lava rocks which form a large fairly shallow ocean pool protected from the waves. This provides an area that is safe for swimming with lifeguard station, restrooms, picnic and BBQ areas, and showers.

Tours on the East Side’s Wailua River

The whole family can take a boat ride or kayak tour up the Wailua River and attend one of the best Hawaiian Luau’s and Polynesian shows on the island at Smiths Tropical Paradise and River Tours.

Dad, mom and the older kids, can rent a kayak from the folks at Wailua River Kayak and Canoe and explore the river and secret waterfall on their own, while the grandparents and the little ones enjoy playing and swimming at Lydgate Beach and Kamalani Park.

Coconut Coast Waterfalls, Picnics and Hiking

Another must see is the Opaekaa waterfall, and the Wailua Arboretum. Many movies have been filmed in the Arboretum region including Jurassic Park. These locations are just a short drive from Wailua Beach, up Kuamoo Road, which runs above the Wailua River. There are fresh mountain water streams to swim in, picnic areas and hiking trails to enjoy.

East Side Walking/Bike Path Offers Great Coastal Views

The newest addition to the east side of Kauai is the now, the 5-mile biking/walking path that runs from Lydgate Park to Kealia beach at the North end of Kapaa. Your family can rent bicycles of all sizes, or walk to tour the entire Coconut Coastline.

A great place to rent a bike for use on the path is Coconut Coasters (808-822-7368) and another reliable bike rental shop is Kauai Cycle and Tour (808-821-2115) which provides Specialized rental bikes. Visit: https://www.kauaipath.org/ for maps and more information about the bike path.
