The Merrie Monarch Festival – Hawaii’s Premier Hula Competition

The Merrie Monarch Festival takes place form April 12 to April 18 and I am going to be staying in a wonderful Big Island Vacation Rental very close to the event in Hilo.

Starting each year on Easter Sunday, the Merrie Monarch Festival hula competition is a prominent showcase of the living Hawaiian culture of mele and hula. The Festival premiered in 1964 as part of the Hilo Festival and then became an organized hula competition in 1971. Today the Merrie Monarch is the premier hula event in Hawaii, and also the largest hula event.

Haleakala National Park – Maui’s Most Famous Attraction

When I was staying in my Maui Vacation Rental the first place I wanted to visit was the summit of Halekala Volcano.

Haleakala dominates the east side of the island of Maui, and this is also the drier leeward side. Haleakala means “House of the shadow of the sun” (hale means “house,” aka means “shadow,” and la means “sun”), is it is an important location in ancient Hawaiian culture.

According to legend, Hina, who is the mother of the demigod Maui, did not have time to dry her kapa cloth, and so Hina asked her trickster son Maui to do something about the short days. Maui saw the sun appear at the top of Haleakala each morning before it raced across the sky, so he went there and waited for the sun to rise.

The Big Island Film Festival at Waikoloa Beach Resort takes place from May 14 through 17, 2009 (https://www.bigislandfilmfestival.com). This is a “Talk Story” Film Festival that celebrates new independent narrative short and feature films.

Top Ten Beaches and Other Sights On Oahu’s North Shore

If you are visiting Oahu there are lots of great sights to check out along the north shore. The best way to really experience the north shore is to get an Oahu Condo in the area and then explore the area at your leisure.

One of the first places you want to visit is Haleiwa, which is known as the “gateway” to Oahu’s north shore. The main street through Haleiwa’s is Kamehameha Highway (Hwy. 83). The arched Rainbow Bridge spans over the Anahulu River, which passes alongside the boat harbor that is bordered on each side by beach parks.

The North Shore Surf & Cultural Museum is located in the North Shore Marketplace, and exhibits vintage surfboards as well as photographs and videos about surfing.
