Hike through lava tubes, enjoy stunning summit views atop Kilauea Volcano and along Crater Rim Drive, and check out the great exhibits at the Kilauea Visitor Center as well as the volcano-themed Jaggar Museum. Not far from Volcano Village is the Volcano Winery where you can taste specialty wines made with tropical fruits. A nice day trip from Volcano is a drive into Hilo town to see the impressive Rainbow Falls at Wailuku River Park just above downtown Hilo. Then drive along the Hamakua Coast to visit charming small towns, see the impressive 442-foot Akaka Falls thundering down the mountain, and gaze into the "Valley of the Kings" at Waipio Lookout.<br></p><p><br></p><p><b>Nearby Beaches</b><br>From Volcano Village you can visit the beaches of the Puna district as well as the Hilo region. About 30 miles south of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the famed Punaluu Black Sand Beach which is a great place to see Hawaiian green sea turtles, known as "honu" in Hawaiian. Fun family snorkeling can be found at Onekahakaha Beach Park just east of the Hilo Airport. The beach has a shallow, sandy-bottomed swimming area, tidepools to explore and nice views of Hilo Bay.
