Great hikes, ziplining, kayaking, snorkeling and a host of other activities are available all around the island. Enjoy the vibrant excitement of Historic Lahaina Town with its rich past of Hawaiian royalty, American missionaries and the whaling era when many visiting ships brought their crews here.
Lahaina is now a center for the arts and also a departure point for sailing cruises and humpback whale watching tours. To the south is Kihei town lined with nice beaches and an abundance of shopping and dining options, and just to the south is the posh resort area of Wailea and the white sands of beautiful Wailea Beach and Makena Beach. The prestigious Wailea Resort is also known for its luxurious spa services and exceptional golf courses.

North of Lahaina are the resort areas of Kapalua and Kaanapali where you can enjoy some of Maui's finest beaches with excellent snorkeling and clear blue water. Browse the shops and grab a bite to eat along Kaanapali's oceanfront promenade. About three miles offshore of Maui is Molokini Islet where you can see a diversity of marine life by scuba diving or snorkeling in the half-submerged volcanic crater.

Take a drive through Maui's scenic Upcountry region to visit charming, small towns and flower farms, and then continue on up to Haleakala National Park for amazing views of the volcano's summit crater and surrounding area with hiking trails through forested areas that are home to rare native birds. Another scenic drive is the twisting and winding road to "Heavenly Hana" town on the eastern tip of the island where you will see many waterfalls and breathtaking coastal vistas. Just past Hana is the lower portion of Haleakala National Park with outstanding hikes including the Pools of Oheo and two impressive waterfalls.

Nearby Beaches

Old Lahaina Town has art galleries and interesting shops and to the south you will find good shopping in Kihei and also Wailea Resort including the Shops at Wailea.

Getting Around

Renting a car is recommended when staying in your Maui condo so you have easy access to the many beaches and attractions around the island from historic Lahaina town and the resort areas of Kaanapali, Kapalua and Wailea to the stunning landscapes atop Haleakala Volcano and the waterfalls and beaches of "Heavenly Hana." Maui's public bus system operates daily including stops at most major towns around the island.

Weather and Ocean Conditions

Maui weather is known for its abundant sunshine and warm, pleasant days with temperatures typically in the mid to upper 70s F. and low 80s. Weather conditions vary considerably in the different regions with the eastern and northern shores being more exposed to the northeast trending trade winds bringing the rain showers that create Maui's lush and tropical landscapes, while the southern and western shores are a bit warmer and drier, with sunny days virtually all year around. Temperatures can be significantly cooler at higher elevations like the Maui Upcountry and atop Haleakala Volcano.

Ocean conditions also vary considerably on different sides of the island. The western shores of Maui often have very calm conditions that are great for water activities, as do the other shores though conditions change from day to day. During the winter months northern swells intermittently bring high surf to northern facing shores, and occasional summer swells can bring high surf to southern facing shores. These ocean swells affect the various shores and beaches differently with some beaches providing more protection from the open ocean than others. For swimming and ocean activities visit Maui's lifeguarded beaches and talk to water safety personnel about the safest areas to enjoy the water activities you choose.

History

Maui is an island with a rich history from the time of the Hawaiian monarchy through the eras of missionaries, whalers, the sugarcane industry and tourism development. Beginning in the 1970's master planned resorts were developed on some of Maui's most scenic shorelines including Wailea, Kaanapali and Kapalua, and today these are among the world's top visitor destinations.

King Kamehameha I established Lahaina as Hawaii's capital after he won a major battle that took place in Iao Valley in 1790. During the 1800s many whaling ships docked in Lahaina Harbor to restock their ships, and the boisterous whalers clashed with the American missionaries that had also established a presence in the region. Soon the sugarcane industry began to shape Hawaii's economy and immigrant laborers were brought in by the tens of thousands from China and Japan as well as the Philippines and numerous other countries. Many of Maui's residents today are descendants of these first sugarcane plantation workers.
Jet travel to the Islands began in 1959 and the 1970s saw Maui's tourist visitor numbers begin to increase dramatically as the master planned resort areas of Kaanapali and Wailea were developed. Follow the self-guided Lahaina Historic Trail to learn more about the fascinating history of Maui with bronze plaques along the route providing information.
