Things To Do

The Waipouli region and Kauai's windward (eastern) shore offers many activities including some great hikes as well as ocean adventures. Enjoy the local beaches or go for a snorkeling excursion boat tour, and whale watching during the winter months. Take a walk along the coastal biking/walking path or rent a bike from one of the many vendors along the east shore and ride along the path to the north or south. Go for an ATV excursion, zipline adventure or horseback ride in the back country.

Hike to the top of the "Sleeping Giant"on Nounou Mountain for panoramic views of the eastern coast. Golfers will enjoy the seaside Wailua Municipal Golf Course. Two impressive east side waterfalls, Wailua Falls and Opaekaa Falls, are both worthy of a visit. Take a river boat cruise up the Wailua River to see the Fern Grotto. The central location of Waipouli makes it easy to visit both the northern and southern areas of Kauai. Take a drive up to visit the north shore towns and beaches from Kilauea to Princeville and Hanalei. Drive south from Waipouli to Poipu Resort and to the west side's Waimea Canyon where you will find great hikes both into the canyon and along the coastal bluffs with views of the Na Pali Coast.

Nearby Beaches

Numerous beaches along the east shore of Kauai offer opportunities for snorkeling, bodyboarding, surfing and other water activities as well as beach walks and relaxation. At the northern end of Kapaa town is the popular Kealia Beach with a lifeguard station, restrooms and showers. Surfers and bodyboarders frequent this beach and the wide expanse of sand makes it nice for beach walks. The northern section of Waipouli Beach is known as Fuji Beach or Baby Beach and can be a nice place for children with a shallow area protected by a rock barrier. Kids also enjoy Lydgate Beach, to the south in Wailua, which has a protected area good for small children and also an elaborate playground built by the community. Farther south are the beautiful beaches of Poipu Resort. Head north of Waipouli to visit the many great north shore beaches including the lovely crescent-shaped Hanalei Bay which is great for water activities and Makua (Tunnels) Beach known for its great snorkeling.

An assortment of dining options near Waipouli offer something for every taste and budget. Baked delights can be found at the pastry shop in Kinipopo Shopping Village, along with exceptional breakfasts at Tutu's Soup Hale as well as tasty Mexican dishes at Monacos. Several nice places to eat are located in the Waipouli Town Center along with a grocery store and coffee shop. Along the east shore's "Coconut Coast"including Wailua, Waipouli and Kapaa you can find a wide range of cuisines including Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese, Mexican food and more. Drive south to Lihue and Poipu Resort for many more exceptional dining choices, and north to Kilauea town, Princeville Resort and Hanalei town.

The Waipouli Town Center offers a variety of large and small stores. Waipouli also has close access to Old Kapaa town with many shops housed in historic buildings still bearing their old wooden fronts including art galleries, coffee shops, boutique gift shops and more. An ongoing Kauai Products Fair offers a variety of artisan vendors at the north end of Kapaa Town. Stop in at Kinopopo Shopping Village for more stores to explore including a clothing shop and art gallery. Bambulei is located in a historic 1930s plantation home in Wailua and offers unique Hawaiian collectibles and hand-crafted jewelry. Head south to Lihue and Poipu Resort for many interesting shops to explore including upscale resort shopping at the resort hotels. Drive up to the north shore for fun shopping including many gift shops and art galleries in Kilauea town, Princeville Resort area and Hanalei town.

Getting Around

Renting a car is recommended when staying in your Waipouli condo so you have easy access to east side beaches and attractions as well as day trips to the charming towns and spectacular beaches of the north shore as well as Poipu Resort on the south side and Waimea Canyon on the west side. Kauai's public bus system operates 7 days a week and provides service between most major communities.

Weather and Ocean Conditions

Waipouli weather is very nice throughout the year with temperatures usually in the mid to high 70s F., slightly warmer during the summer months and a bit cooler during the winter months, with night time temperatures dropping five to ten degrees. Hawaii's northeast trending trade winds provide a pleasant cooling effect. Kauai's north and east shores see more rain and slightly cooler temperatures than the south and west shores.

Ocean conditions vary through the seasons with Waipouli and other east shore beaches typically quite calm during the summer months and nice for snorkeling, swimming and enjoying the beach. Winter months bring intermittent north swells to the Hawaiian Islands which can create high surf and strong currents. South swells sometimes arrive during the summer months bringing bigger waves mainly along southern coastlines. Some beaches are more protected from the open sea than others, and ocean conditions can change from day to day. For water activities it is best to visit lifeguarded beaches and check with lifeguards about the safest places for the ocean activities you choose.

History

Waipouli and the greater "Coconut Coast"have a rich history from the days of the Hawaiian monarchy to sugarcane planation towns and Hollywood movie sets. Take a Kauai Movie Tour to see filming locations including the favorite spots of Elvis Presley. Many of the buildings throughout this area are preserved from the plantation era and now house shops and restaurants. Many historic cultural sites are located in this area including heiau (ancient places of worship) near the Wailua River and along the road up into the valley.
