At Lava Tree State Park a short loop trail lets you view unusual volcanic features resulting from lava that once flowed through this area. The flows left behind a forest of "lava trees" which are lava molds of the tree trunks. Restrooms and picnic tables make this a nice place for a picnic. Drive north to Hilo town to see Rainbow Falls and past Hilo along the Hamakua Coast to Akaka Falls and the Waipio Valley Lookout. A highlight of this region is a visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to see the summit craters, Thurston Lava Tube, Hawaiian petroglyph carvings and the Jaggar Museum overlooking Halemaumau Crater.</p><p><br></p><p><b>Nearby Beaches</b><br>The Kapoho Tidepools are found along a stretch of coastline and include pools that are heated from the volcano. Brackish waters provide a relaxing soak to soothe your muscles from the day's adventures and there is some good snorkeling here with a variety of fish. This area of spring fed pools and tidepools spans for about one mile along the shore and up to 200 yards out into the sea. Beach shoes are recommended due to the rocky areas that can be rough and slippery. Isaac Hale Beach Park is located at Pohoiki Bay and used by local fishermen to launch their boats.</p><p><br></p><p><b>Restaurants</b><br>Nearby Pahoa offers a variety of restaurants including Italian, Thai and Mexican as well as a deli and bakery.
