Winter months bring bigger surf to the north shore though protected areas at lifeguarded beaches still often provide options for swimming and enjoying ocean activities. Golfers can enjoy two courses at Turtle Bay including the Arnold Palmer Course and George Fazio Course. You can also enjoy horseback riding along this coastline as well as in the mountain valleys. Visit Waimea Valley to view the botanical gardens and swim beneath Waimea Falls. Head down to Laie to visit the Polynesian Cultural Center where you can learn about Hawaii and other Pacific Island cultures with themed villages that are entertaining fun for the whole family. They also have an IMAX theater and put on an impressive and theatrical dinner show. Nearby Beaches Fishing, diving and surfing are popular activities at Turtle Bay though it's not the best swimming beach due to the coral reef and rocky areas near shore. This is a nice beach for a picnic with trees along the shore providing plenty of shady areas for relaxing. The neighboring Bayview Beach is better for swimming with a sandy bottom, located in a protected cove area bordered by two limestone points. During times of high surf there may be strong currents and swimming is not recommended, though during the summer months the water is typically very calm and great for ocean activities.
