Things To Do
Among the numerous beaches in this area the most popular is Kealia beach located on the north end of Kapaa town. This is a lifeguarded beach and is a favorite among the east side bodyboarders and surfers. Ocean conditions can often be a bit tricky here so if you are learning to surf you should choose a beach with gentler waves, and taking a surfing lesson is recommended. Kealia is a wide, sandy beach great for beach walks.
Rent bicycles in Kapaa town and explore the county bike and walking path that follows this whole stretch of shoreline. You can also walk the path. Either way it's a great way to enjoy the sounds, sights and smells of the coast and also meet friendly people as this is a popular daily exercise route for many local residents.
A popular east side family hike is the Sleeping Giant Trail (officially known as Nounou Trail), which rewards you with spectacular views of the east shore and Wailua River as well as inland to Mt. Waialeale. For more great beaches, hikes and activities drive down to the Poipu Resort area or up to the lush and verdant north shore.
Eat and Shop
In recent years Kapaa's central commercial area has developed a hipper vibe with live music and a variety of great places to catch a snack or shave ice in the day or dine out at night. A two-mile stretch along the main road in Kapaa takes you by dozens of places to eat from fast food to fine dining. There are several shopping complexes and a variety of art galleries, boutique shops, supermarkets and pretty much everything you will need to enjoy your Kauai vacation.
More great dining and shopping can be found to the north in Kilauea town, at the Princeville resort and in Hanalei. Head south to Poipu Resort area for some exceptional seaside dining and boutique shops at the resort hotels.
A rental car is recommended when staying in Kapaa condos with central access to the resort areas and beaches of the south shore as well as the the charming north shore towns, hikes and more spectacular beaches
