More preserved Hawaiian cultural sites can be seen on a short hike that begins at Holoholokai Beach and leads to the Puako Petroglyph Archaeological Preserve. Holoholokai Beach is also fun for snorkeling as well as tidepool exploring. Mauna Kea Beach, also called Kaunaoa Beach, is bordered by a lovely crescent of white sand with clear blue water making it one of this coastline's prettiest beaches. Ranked among Hawaii's best beaches is Hapuna Beach which has restrooms and picnic facilities making it  a great place to spend the day.

Expect average daily temperatures around 78 degrees F., a bit colder in the winter and a bit warmer during the summer with a pleasant, cooling effect provided by trade winds. Temperatures at night typically drop about 5 to 15 degrees.

Ocean conditions vary widely at Big Island beaches though the western shore see calm conditions for much of the year with intermittent swells that may bring high surf and strong currents.
