Welcome to Kilohana! This is a very unique vacation rental in Upcountry Maui. Kilohana was designed and built in 1916-1917 by the Haleakala Cattle Ranch as a retirement home for its first Ranch Manager, Louis von Tempski.

We are happy to share our piece of Mauis history with you and look forward to welcoming you to Kilohana!

Kilohana features unique settings, privacy and incomparable views. Historically prominent, this home served as the setting for several well known books about early ranch life on Maui. Situated on two acres (and surrounded by many more), the extensive lawns and gardens boast an unusual variety of more than fifty trees, shrubs and plants from around the world. Fresh lemons and limes abound in its newly planted citrus grove. Privacy is assured, as the neighbors are mynah birds, polo ponies and dairy cattle. The setting is almost difficult to describe - imagine looking out the windows, across a large lawn, beyond a pasture, to the North Coastline! And imagine seeing only a natural setting, without roof tops etc. in the view. Very few rental properties can offer this escape to the "Kama'aina days".

Within the 4200 sf of living space, there is a large living room with lava rock fireplace, a formal dining room with a second fireplace and an antique koa wood table. Plenty of spectacular views of the sea and mountains. There are three bedrooms (king, two twins, king) and a fourth TV/den room with a single bed. The living/dining area and three bedrooms have French doors opening to the eighty-five foot covered, screened lanai. To one end of the lanai is a glassed area, with a queen daybed. Includes a TV/DVD and CD boom-box style stereo. The kitchen is well stocked and there is a large laundry room.

The closest thing to an urban center in Upcountry is Makawao. Today Makawao is a lively community of cowboys and hippies, with galleries, boutiques, and restaurants. In the renovated stores, you'll find everything from a general store and an old-fashioned barbershop to health food, holistic medicine, and designer fashions. You can buy feed for your horse or gourmet olive oil for your kitchen, a bowl of saimin or fettuccini with porcini mushrooms. The town is a paradox of old paniolo and new age, pickup trucks and BMW's. That's what makes Makawao special - the old welcoming the new in the true Upcountry spirit.

And all of this is just a mile down the hill from Kilohana. Forgot the bottle of wine for dinner? No problem... run down to Rodeo General Store in Makawao.

The North Shore is a quick fifteen minute drive down the hill. The North Shore beaches are beautiful, but can be windy in the summer. Wave season on the North Shore is fall/winter/spring. These beaches are more "local", and you will definitely not feel like a "tourist". The swimming beaches of Kihei, Wailea and Makena are located on the South Shore, and will be approximately 30 to 45 minutes by car.

This property has a vacation rental permit issued by the County of Maui, and is subject to the rules and restrictions imposed by the County for all short term rental homes. Please understand that we would be unable to accept a rental that does not agree to abide by these rules. Note: properties without a short term rental permit are subject to closure by the County.
1. Neighbors - Please be considerate of our neighbors. Noise carries easily to their homes, particularly in the evening. NO loud music, NO parties, NO amplified sound of any nature at any time. Many neighbors must be up early in the morning to go to work, and its important that your use of this property does not impact them in any way.
2. Quiet Hours - Quiet time is from 9pm to 8am.
3. Use of the Property - Additional friends/family CANNOT be invited to the property and it cannot be used as a meeting place. The property can be used ONLY by the guests listed on the rental agreement. The County law allows us to accommodate a maximum of two guests x the number of bedrooms.
4. Parking - There is plenty of parking on the property. Vehicles CANNOT be parked on the street at any time. When vehicles are on the street, there is insufficient space for emergency vehicles, fire trucks, the trash truck or neighbors to get down the road.
