Step back in time... to the early 1900's and explore Maui from the homestead of the first manager of Haleakala Ranch! This is a very unique vacation rental in Upcountry Maui. Kilohana was designed and built in 1916-1917 by the Haleakala Cattle Ranch as a retirement home for its first Ranch Manager, Louis von Tempski.
In the Kama'aina tradition, we continue to make every effort to make Kilohana a welcoming, comfortable, safe and healthy home for our family and others. Kilohana retains its kamaaina flavor with a large ranch kitchen, living room and dining room (with koa wood dining table & furniture).
The master bedroom enjoys a large koa wood bed from the missionary era. An 85 foot screened lanai provides a beautiful view of West Maui and down-county. Kilohana boasts a variety of more than 50 trees, shrubs and plants many of which were planted by von Tempski, his daughters, and our family. In keeping with Kilohanas agricultural heritage, it is surrounded by pasture land and friendly animals can be seen just beyond the fence. The property is planted with more than 48 fruit trees; primarily citrus, but avocados and bananas will be found. They are there to be enjoyed by our family, friends and guests.
Kilohana is located in Makawao, the closest thing to an urban center in Upcountry. Today Makawao is a lively community of cowboys and hippies, with galleries, boutiques, and restaurants. In the renovated stores, you'll find everything from a general store and an old-fashioned barbershop to health food, holistic medicine, and designer fashions. You can buy feed for your horse or gourmet olive oil for your kitchen, a bowl of saimin or fettuccini with porcini mushrooms. The town is a paradox of old paniolo and new age, pickup trucks and BMW's. That's what makes Makawao special - the old welcoming the new in the true Upcountry spirit.
And all of this is just a mile down the hill from Kilohana. Forgot the bottle of wine for dinner? No problem... run down to Rodeo General Store in Makawao. Looking for fresh Local pastries.... nothing better than Komoda's Store, a local tradition!
And a few miles down the hill: Haliimaile General Store, one of the best restaurants on Maui!

This property has a vacation rental permit issued by the County of Maui, and is subject to the rules and restrictions imposed by the County for all short term rental homes. Please understand that we would be unable to accept a rental that does not agree to abide by these rules. Note: properties without a short term rental permit are subject to closure by the County.
1. Neighbors - Please be considerate of our neighbors. Noise carries easily to their homes, particularly in the evening. NO loud music, NO parties, NO amplified sound of any nature at any time. Many neighbors must be up early in the morning to go to work, and its important that your use of this property does not impact them in any way.
2. Quiet Hours - Quiet time is from 9pm to 8am.
3. Use of the Property - Additional friends/family CANNOT be invited to the property and it cannot be used as a meeting place. The property can be used ONLY by the guests listed on the rental agreement. The County law allows us to accommodate a maximum of two guests x the number of bedrooms.
4. Parking - There is plenty of parking on the property. Vehicles CANNOT be parked on the street at any time. When vehicles are on the street, there is insufficient space for emergency vehicles, fire trucks, the trash truck or neighbors to get down the road.
5. Minimum of 1 guest must meet the minimum age requirement of 25.
At the time of booking, we'll forward the property rental agreement for review and acceptance.
