Beach lovers can head from Makawao down to Hookipa Beach Park to see some of the world's best kitesurfers and windsurfers, or take a swim and relax on the white sands of Baldwin Beach Park. Makawao is also close to the road to "Heavenly Hana" which is one of Hawaii's most scenic drives with many stops along the way to see waterfalls and sweeping coastal vistas.

Makawao has a variety of shopping shopping and dining opportunities from boutique shopping to craft stores and art galleries as well as stores for the locals including a barber shop and grocery store.
