About West Molokai Vacation Rentals
Our West Molokai vacation rentals offer the finest in luxury and relaxation for a wonderful Hawaii vacation. Molokai is an island seemingly untouched by time providing a rare serenity and tranquility along with warm sunshine, balmy tradewinds and scenic natural beauty from the mountains to the sea.
Things To Do
The western Moloka shoreline has many sheltered coves and pristine beaches that are never crowded. In fact, you might be the only one there! The expansive Papohaku Beach stretches on for three miles making it great for really long beachwalks. Papohaku has restroom facilities but no lifeguard and is best for swimming during the summer months while winter is best for sunbathing and beach walks.
A great place to watch the sunset on the west end of Molokai is Dixie Maru Beach, also called Kapukahehu. Swimming can be good in the sheltered cove here when the water is calm, particularly during the summer months.
On Molokai you will find good opportunities for snorkeling or scuba diving, kayaking and fishing. Out of Kaunakakai you can take a snorkeling or sport fishing excursion, or relax on a sunset sail or dinner cruise. Get up close and personal with humpback whales during the winter months on whale watching tours.
The Moomomi Nature Preserve on Molokai's northwestern shore is the site of unique sand dune ecosystems and native bird habitat. This remote region can be viewed on monthly guided hikes led by the Nature Conservancy.
One of Molokai's most notable attractions is the Kalaupapa National Historical Park where Hansen's disease victims were exiled to in the 1800s. Mule rides down the sea cliffs into the valley taking in sweeping vistas of the magnificent sea cliffs and the northern shore. Kalaupapa tours tell the story of the colony from human suffering to courage and determination.
Stop in at Coffees of Hawaii in Kualapuu to see a working coffee plantation (morning and afternoon tours). Their espresso bar will energize you and there's also a nice gift shop, live music on Sundays and a Mule-Drawn Wagon Tour around the coffee plantation. At Purdy's Natural Macadamia Nut Farm in Hoolehua you can tour their 70-year-old farm and sample the products.
Eat and Shop
The charming upcountry town of Maunaloa is a small community that still reflects its historic roots as a plantation village. Maunaloa has a small grocery store, some gift shops and a post office. One of the more interesting shops in Maunaloa is the Big Wind Kite Factory and Plantation Gallery with a variety of unique gifts, art and hand-crafted jewelry items. You can even take a kite-flying lesson and tour the factory.
Drive over to Molokai's main town of Kaunakakai for grocery stores as well as interesting shops and welcoming family-run restaurants.
Getting Around
A rental car is recommended when staying in Maunaloa vacation rentals so you can explore the many great beaches and other attractions of beautiful Molokai from the Kalaupapa peninsula to Kaunakakai
