Hawaii's northeast trending trade winds provide a pleasant cooling effect.

Ocean conditions vary through the seasons with the east shore including Wailua quite calm during the summer months, creating good conditions for snorkeling and other ocean activities. Winter months often bring north swells to the Hawaiian Islands which can create high surf and strong currents along eastern shores. South swells sometimes arrive during the summer months bringing bigger waves mainly along southern coastlines. Some beaches are more protected from the open ocean, and conditions can change from day to day. For swimming and water sports it is best to visit lifeguarded beaches and check with water safety personnel about the safest places for the ocean activities you choose.
