You can also walk this seaside path called Ke Ala Hele Makalae (The Path that Goes by the Coast) where you will see many friendly local residents on their daily exercise routine. The boat meanders upriver letting you enjoy the many sights along the way. After about 40 minutes you get to the Fern Grotto where you are serenaded with Hawaiian music that resonates with the cave's unique acoustics.

Nearby Beaches

There are numerous exceptional beaches along the "Coconut Coast"including Kealia Beach at the north end of Kapaa town. The north end of the beach is the most protected from the open sea and there is also a lifeguard station. The shore break and currents can be quite strong when there is surf, making the beach popular for experienced bodyboarders and surfers. The beach is wide and sandy making it great for beach walks. The child-friendly Lydgate Beach Park in Wailua also has an elaborate and very impressive playground built by the community.

Weather and Ocean Conditions

Wailua weather is very nice throughout the year with temperatures usually in the mid to high 70s F. becoming a bit warmer in the summer and a bit cooler during the winter months Temperatures typically drop five to ten degrees at night. Hawaii's northeast trending trade winds provide a pleasant cooling effect.

Ocean conditions vary through the seasons with the east shore including Wailua quite calm during the summer months, creating good conditions for snorkeling and other ocean activities. Winter months often bring north swells to the Hawaiian Islands which can create high surf and strong currents along eastern shores. South swells sometimes arrive during the summer months bringing bigger waves mainly along southern coastlines. Some beaches are more protected from the open ocean, and conditions can change from day to day. For swimming and water sports it is best to visit lifeguarded beaches and check with water safety personnel about the safest places for the ocean activities you choose.
