Big Island Country Club

Description

A 30 minute drive out of Kona can bring you to golfing in cool country comfort. The Big Island Country Club is at 2,200 feet upslope on Hualalai Mountain, providing lower temperatures and elevated views of postcard Hawaii. This is not a resort course, but instead reflects local island golf.

Highlights: Lose the commotion of the coastline resorts and enjoy the quiet countryside in this park-like setting with ponds, native geese, and wide gently rolling Bermuda grass fairways.
Challenges: The course design features several ponds, bunkers mid-fairway and surrounding greens, but has wide fairways and playability for all level of golfer. Watch out for the wild turkeys and occasional goats.
Holes/Yardage: 18-Par 72-6,583 Blue/6,022 White/4,582 Red
Price Range: $89 before 12/ $65 after 12 pm/ $35 after 3 pm (9 holes)
Location: Kona side
Bonuses: On-site club Titleist rentals $45, leaving the resorts for mountain golf

This can be a good change of pace, but course conditions may not be as immaculate as the higher price coastal resort courses in the area. The temperature will be about 10 degrees cooler then the coast on any given day, and the course has a park-like setting complete with many ponds and water hazards that support the local ecology as a bird habitat. The rare nene goose, our state bird and an endangered species frequents the course as well as many wetland species of native bird. Online reviews mention that the afternoon special here is the best deal, but the morning rates compare the coastal course rates.
