Mauna Kea ranked #31 by Golf Digest as one of America's 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses, the Robert Trent Sr. designed course runs along the ocean in the beautiful Mauna Kea Resort. Opened originally in 1964, and restored in 2009, the Mauna Kea still has its original design character but has been enhanced with hybrid fairway and greens grasses making it immaculately well groomed and fun to play.


Highlights: The Mauna Kea Course has several fantastic ocean front holes, well groomed fairways and greens make this some of the best golf on island.
Challenges: The course design features the ocean as a water hazard on several holes, 99 bunkers, both mid-fairway and surrounding greens throughout the course.

Mauna Kea Golf Course's signature hole #3 is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful golf holes ever designed by famed course designer Robert Trent Jones, Sr.. Not all the holes are oceanfront, the course meanders through the resort and features picture postcard fairway views. The course has many affirmative online reviews, noting the lesser crowds and faster play accordingly, as well as the ability to shop around online to find discounted rates.

Directions:

  • North of Kona, off of the Queen Kaahumanu Highway aka HI-route 19. Drive 30 minutes North of Kona looking for signs for Hapuna Beach State Park, go over the overpass and look for the entrance to Mauna Kea Beach Hotel approximately one mile past this mark. On the left side of the highway, you'll see a lava rock wall with "Mauna Kea" on the side. As you turn into the driveway, you'll approach a gatehouse and the staff will direct you to the hotel and golf course.
  • West of Waimea, off of the Queen Kaahumanu Highway aka HI-route 19. Drive 20 minutes past Waimea, 1 mile past the junction for HI route 270 , on the right side of road you'll see a lava rock wall with "Mauna Kea" on the side. As you turn into the driveway, you'll approach a gatehouse and the staff will direct you to the hotel and golf course.
