Hibiscus Hale (HAW-lay) is large, bright and elegantly appointed. A modern Hawaiian home, it's 2800 sq.ft may be easily shared by two families or 3 or 4 couples. Yet it retains a sense of seclusion and privacy. In an upscale neighborhood on the slope of Mauna Loa, the wide lanai overlooks the yard, the sparkling pool, palms and landscaped tropical greenery. It is directly above downtown quaint, active Kailua Village, which is situated along a wide bay on the Kona Coast.

From Kona airport (KOA) make an easy drive nine miles south on Hwy 11 into Kailua Village, then eight blocks up the mountainside. The circular driveway has a covered portico. The entry leads to the inviting ambiance of the upper living space and lanai level, appointed with both modern art and traditional Hawaiian decor.

The glass back and side walls slide to open the living room to the tropical views of the lanai. There are large leather couches, a 60in. television, lounge chairs, and large stone coffee table. The dining area opens to the veranda view. Wood and glass cabinetry, dually accessible from dining area and kitchen, contains enough fine dinner ware to accommodate the largest group. The kitchen is fully equipped. It has a new gas stove and refrigerator, a food prep island, plus appliances and convenient gadgetry to suit need and culinary whim.

"THE BEDS WERE FANTASTIC" -Scott and Ann T. -New York

The master bedroom is spacious and quiet. It has a king bed, walk-in closet and private bath with a glass block shower. The bedroom has a high ceiling with a fan, air conditioning, television, window seat and warm wood window treatments. Its furniture, lamps and art pieces blend traditional and modern Hawaiiana.

The second bedroom, has a king bed, closet, ceiling fan, air conditioning and Hawaiiana furnishings to continue the thematic decor. There is an adjoining bath (not in-suite), again with a glass block shower.

Upstairs from the dining area is a carpeted cupola space with 360 degree views. Equipped as an office with high speed wireless internet, desk and chair plus lounge chair, lamps and small table, the room is a quiet workspace... easily adapted to a crow's nest hideout to sleep a few young pirates.

The lanai wraps around three sides of the house, accessible from each. This elevated veranda has a large gas BBQ, two porch swings, table and chairs. The left side brushes the canopy of our large producing mango tree. The right looks over a driveway extension with added parking space.

Downstairs the third bedroom has a king bed, closet, ceiling fan and AC. A sliding glass door opens to the covered porch, the yard and gateway to the pool. Adjacent to the bedroom is a third bath and shower. A hallway accesses a linen closet and laundry room with washer, dryer and utility sink. There is work space and cabinets with cleaning supplies and small tools. The laundry room with a door to the yard, serves as a convenient changing room for pool use. There is a storage room for beach supplies.

"THE DOWNSTAIRS WAS LARGE ENOUGH FOR OUR KIDS TO HAVE THEIR OWN SPACE" Monica R. -Oregon

Also on the lower level, the fourth bedroom is the largest room in the house. It is carpeted, looks out to the back yard. It has two double beds, two dressers, AC, multiple ceiling fans and a dehumidifier. The room includes a recreation area with two love seats, a large lounge chair, a 48in. flat screen TV, wet bar, a game table with four chairs and a floor to ceiling book shelf stocked with books and table games. There is enough floor space for additional bedding if needed. (There is a full-size deluxe, self-inflating 9" thick air mattress w/bedding; takes 3 min. to set up.) An interior doorway connects back to the third bedroom. Another sliding door provides separate entry to the side driveway.

The bright floral yard is enclosed by rock and wrought iron fence. It has gated steps to the spacious lower terrace pool area. This verdant oasis is surrounded by palms and flowering trees to create a secluded tropical play area. The pool is large, 18ft.x50ft. There is an outdoor shower, a bin of pool toys, ample pool furniture and a table with shade umbrella.

Reviews

  • We were a large group of 8 adults and 5 children. The house accommodated all of us beautifully. The grounds were well kept and the pool was great fun, although a little cloudy because the bag on the mechanism that cleans the bottom of the pool would get full of plaster that is chipping on the bottom and would be too heavy to continue doing it's job. We had to clean it out at least 3 times. Or maybe not enough chlorine being used? Starting with the first night through the fourth night a stomach bug passed through the majority of the group, sparing only 4 children an 2 adults. We thought it was very strange because we came from different parts of the country and did not all eat the same thing after we arrived. We felt it was wise to reclean all surfaces and doorknobs throughout the house. Since the house was closed up when we arrived and there was no smell of bleach, I have to wonder if they use bleach regularly when they clean the house. I'm not so sure I would recommend renting a house to my friends.

Comment by Owner/Manager:

We are terribly sorry that you all got sick. The house was empty for about a week before your stay. It was cleaned right after the last guest and I had the ladies go over there the morning of your arrival to make sure that all was still in order to accommodate your early arrival. The laundry is done professionally by a commercial laundry company to make sure it is sanitized. We also have someone check all of our workers to make sure it is done accordingly. Is it possible that perhaps the illness was contracted on the flights? At any rate, had you called we would have had the ladies go over and re-clean for you just to make sure. The same with the pool. The chips in the bag are actually in there to weigh the pool cleaner down a bit. I will have our pool guy recheck the pool again and would have been happy to send him out while you were there. We try to make sure everything is in order and we don't know if something goes wrong unless we or our handyman is notified. I wish you had a better time while you were there. I hope you all are feeling better now.

  • The home was lovely, however the cleanliness had much to be desired. The floors and counters were kind of sticky. Had no problem living with our little green friends but there was poop everywhere and apparently the cockroaches out numbered them. One beds out of 5 was comfortable. We enjoyed the outdoors, the pool was great however the lounge chairs were not clean. All in all we had a Wonderful time and enjoyed great customer service. We would definitely recommend your services and the home. We are sad to be back home in the wet and cold. Thank you

Comment by Owner/Manager:

We are thrilled you had a good time but distressed that you found the home lacking in cleanliness. We take pride in making sure it is in great shape. If we had known we certainly would have had someone out there immediately to remedy the situation. It is always helpful to get a heads up especially when renting a home. Thanks for your feedback.

  • Overall:3 The location of the home was great. 5 minutes from the beach & downtown, yet quiet neighborhood. The home itself was pretty good. Apparently, the maids that cleaned the house prior to our arrival loaded the outside garbages & did not take them to the street for pickup. We did call the handy-man & he took care of the garbage right away. We planned a BBQ only to find out that the propane had been left on & the bottles were empty. We had to exchange the bottle at Wal-mart. The Geckos were something to get used to running around the house, but no big deal. The kitchen/dining room area was overwhelmed with little white spiders/bugs everywhere. We kept ALL food in the fridge. Might be time for a fumigation. House was very spacious with a good floor plan. The pool could have been cleaner, but the kids did use it. Will we go back to Kona? DEFINITELY!! Will we stay at Hibiscus Hale? Probably not. Kona is an incredible place!! We truly enjoyed every minute we were there.

Comment by Owner/Manager:

We are very happy that the location of our home and the layout was convenient. We take pride in our home and want all our guests to feel comfortable. We wish you would have called us directly. We pay to have someone replace the propane and take out the garbage and the only way we know if it is not done is if someone tells us. In addition, we have the place checked for bugs and at times they can appear over night in a tropical location. We contacted our housekeeper and our pool man to make sure that the issue is remedied immediately. Thanks for letting us know. Our only regret is that we did not have the opportunity to rectify the issues prior to your departure.
