Nearby is the palm-fringed crescent of beautiful Makena Beach. These waters are also one of the best places in Hawaii to see humpback whales passing by offshore during the winter months. On the eastern end of Maui near Hana is Waianapanapa State Park with striking coastal views amid the rugged lava rocks and blue water.
